It was Caleb's turn tonight...
First, let me say, that he played pretty hard to get. When I told him we were going to have a date night, he was just horrified, saying, "Mommy, I'm not old enough to date," and then, "Mommy, I can't date with you... you already dated with Daddy!" I finally convinced him that it was OK for us to have a Mommy/Caleb "date night" and what that meant was that we were going to go do something special together, but yes... he is too young to date until his 42nd birthday, and no... Mommy would not date anyone but Daddy... and him... and Seth... and Ian...
Finally we were off to Thomas the Tank Engine Live: A Circus Comes to Town! We had to drive over an hour to get there, and Caleb actually took a nap, which was a good thing since the show had such a late start time. When we were less than five minutes from our destination it occurred to me that I had absolutely no cash on me and that it was going to cost us to park and that the parking lot attendant probably wasn't going to take my credit card...
We pulled over at the mall and I actually paid for an ATM transaction... the second time I've done this since moving here, and I think the second or third time I've done this in my life. I felt kind of irritated with myself. We hopped back into the van and headed straight for the Island of Sodor...
I think Caleb was actually more enamoured with the spinning, light up toy that I bought him... and with the huge bag of popcorn that we could not even manage to consume completely than he was with the show. Don't get me wrong, he had a fantastic time, and it was completely worth it. I just found it hilarious that I actually had to encourage Thomas' biggest fan on a couple of occasions to focus on the stage!
As far as what I thought? Well... I was looking at the number of ticket stubs we've collected over the past 18 months, and it's something like ridiculous... When you are almost 30 years old, every stage show starts to look the same (except at Disney, of course... Disney is magic...). At any rate, I loved being there, because this was for Caleb. I loved taking him out and just enjoying a night together. But dinner afterward (Cheddar's, yum) was probably a bigger highlight for me than Thomas... Still, here's a few pics. of the adventure:
And a quick video clip at the end of the show:
We got home around 11:30... Definitely after curfew...

Stealin' Some Quotes...
I am a sucker for interesting quotes. I used to update pretty regularly with a "Quote of the Day" but have not done so in quite a while... However, when I check my e-mail there is always a quote of the day, and there have been a couple of pretty good ones lately that made me think. Hope you like these as much as I did:
Quote # 1: "History never looks like history when you are living through it." (John W. Gardner)
Quote #2: "Talent does what it can; genius does what it must." (Robert Bulwer Lytton)
For those of you who are still waiting on back blogs, hold on... I was halfway through my post about the children's museum when my browser crashed, and I don't have time to rewrite today...

Final Grades...
... Among other more important life happenings...
So the final grades for the semester are in, and I have earned 2 As and 2 Bs. Overall, I'm alright with that. I am sort of disappointed in myself, because I know that I definitely had the potential to earn a 4.0 this semester (gets a little more elusive every term...), but there were a couple of weeks in there where I had to choose between my grades and my sanity, and since there is precious little of the latter left, I decided to preserve it...
I hope to post about my awesome day at the Children's Museum with Seth and about Caleb's 5th birthday and party in the very near future. Today is a little on the hectic side, but if I can get it done, I will... Keep lookin'!

Uh... That Was Scary...
So I was working on ordering Caleb's birthday pictures today when I realized that the rest of my house was way too quiet...
I stepped out into the living room and found Grace reading a book, which is usually a good sign, because she is a pretty responsible kid and keeps tabs on Ian, and Ian doesn't tend to stray very far from her side when I am not in the room...
Except then I heard Ian from what seemed like very, "far, far away," as he would say. At this point I realized that he was upstairs, which is getting more common as he masters the childproof devices, but I don't really like to find him up there if I don't know that's where he's gone. I trekked up the stairs...
And there I found Ian at my closed bedroom door, kinds shaking...
It took me just a moment to realize that he was cold, because he was soaking wet from head to foot. It took me just another moment to realize that the shower was running...
My 2 year old took a shower... by himself... completely clothed...
This is just not a good way to start your morning...
I think Ian was kind of proud of himself, but I don't think he will ever do that again... The rest of the day he kept saying things like, "Showers are only for Mommy and Daddy!"
Just when I thought I'd seen it all...

Party Time...
Caleb's Thomas the Tank Engine themed party was a huge hit! At least for Caleb it was, and that's what really counts. I do not, personally, enjoy birthday parties anymore. They send me into super stressed, overdrive mode... and I'm gettin' too old for that...
We had a wonderful turn out of friends and family (36 total), and Caleb had a blast playing, crackin' open the Thomas pinata (they don't make pinatas like they used to), opening his tons of awesome gifts, and eating his Thomas the Tank Engine cake (which is another story in and of itself and the primary reason why I am glad that I only have one more five year old birthday party to plan)!
Happy Birthday again, K.K.... I love you!

Happy 5th Birthday, Caleb!!!
Oh... Wow...
Turning five is just huge...
Five years ago, I experienced the most physically demanding day of my life, mixed with an emotional roller coaster ride that, in turn, brought me face to face with one absolutely amazing baby boy...
I remember looking at Caleb for the first time and thinking that I didn't want to miss a single moment of his life. Looking back, now... it just goes too fast...
So this morning, I was awakened by a spinning ball of kinetic energy, running circles around my bed! This began when Caleb's feet hit the floor after realizing that it was his birthday! In a lot of ways, it was a sort of regular Wednesday. Five years old marks a coming of age in our house, so there will be a big party for friends on Saturday.
Our activities included birthday pics (some of which were "rained out", but that's the beauty of back blogging) and music class. Caleb chose his birthday dinner after much deliberation, and we ended up with pizza, cupcakes, and mint moose tracks ice cream. Phil and I gave him his presents from us, but Seth, Grace, and Ian will wait for party day...
Gosh... he is just so big:

Goin' On Dates...
... with my kids is a lot of fun!
Seth and I had a "date day" today. Originally I had planned to take him to the Children's Museum and also to a place called Kiln Creations, where he could paint pottery or melt glass or whatever. Seth is really into art. However, we were having such a great time at the Children's Museum (which we had never been to before) that when I asked him if he wanted to leave around 3:00, he looked at me as if I had just sprouted a third eye. We stayed there all day, instead, and I'll save the rest for another day!
It is not all that often that I get to go out with Seth, alone, anymore. This child who I enjoyed countless walks and days in the park with during his first year of life is getting so big! I honestly can't say where the time goes, but it goes too fast.
At any rate, Seth and I left around 8:00am and headed for Indy. The Children's Museum is so much easier to find than the zoo, and you know you're in for a good time when you pull up to an enormous building that has dinosaurs busting through the walls! Seth did, indeed, come face to face with a dinosaur later in our day, but not before I was eaten by a dragon. I honestly tried to convince Seth that he should be eaten, as it is family tradition, but he was adamant that it was my turn. He told me that he was not going to be eaten by anything, today! This is the point at which (with much fear and trepidation... this was worse than being consumed by the dragon) I put my $800.00 camera into the hands of my 8 year old. He did just fine:
We really enjoyed both the Lego Castle exhibit (which is gone now and was one of the main reasons that we had to go on the weekend we did) and Dinosphere. It was seriously cool when it started "raining" in the prehistoric world!
We traveled through the ocean, which was a hit for Seth since he got to climb into and through several submarines, and we browsed the train exhibit, which was nice but would probably be more intriguing to Caleb... and Daddy... The Egyptian tomb went over about as well as the one at Busch Gardens. A trip to the pyramids is not in the works for this family, although I would enjoy exploring them, myself.
Fireworks of glass was definitely a favorite. I think that Seth enjoyed creating with the plastic pieces that looked like the glass, but I was simply intrigued by the glass structure, itself. Seth also liked running up and down the ramp so I could snap some pics of him with the glass!
Lunch was not such a hit... I think I paid like $3.00 for a cookie! But... alas... this day was about Seth, and not about me, and the truth is, I will never be able to afford to pay $3.00 for cookies for everyone, so on individual date days with Mom, you get what you want! I wanted water... and that's what I had...
Speaking of which, the water tower clock was incredible! I am very glad that Seth agreed, because I really wanted to watch the hour change, and he acquiesced... twice! We are probably the only two people in the world who found it interesting enough to stand and watch the thing for a total of 15-20 minutes over the course of the day, but that's alright... we're just cool like that!
After lunch we took a quick spin through the Super Hero exhibit (another exhibit that is now gone). I really thought that Seth would like this, but he most certainly did not. I think this is largely due to the fact that he has not been exposed to most of these "heroes", because the trash they put out about them now is not really the kind of thing that I want my kids to associate with what makes a hero. Seth probably thought that I was subjecting him to something terribly inappropriate based on the fact that we have not really allowed Spiderman in our house. That said, if anyone feels the need to send me a gift, I would love the 1990s Spiderman cartoon series on DVD. I think it's high time that Seth was introduced to that Spiderman, and let's face it, I used to rush home from work (this is after I was married) in order to catch every episode, myself!
Next, we spent an entire hour in The Power of Children: Making a Difference exhibit. I doubt that we will be able to spend that much time when we take everyone, but I really appreciate that Seth loves to read every sign, because that gave me time to do the same! Personally, I felt that this was the most powerful exhibit in the building, although I can see how it might be "boring" for smaller kids.
We then proceeded to ask if we could take a quick walk through Playscape (the preschool area), because I wanted to check it out for future visits. I think the staff person was going to tell us no until we ran into a friend from the church I attended in High School who was working at the museum! Thanks to Kathy, we got to see what is available for Caleb and Ian, and it is always fun to catch up with someone you have not seen in 10 years! Having connections is a good thing!
We enjoyed Story Avenue quickly (we were running out of time), although I would love to sit and listen to every story in the future, and then we headed to Science Works. This was another favorite stop for Seth even before we actually crossed the threshold! I have a quick video clip of him playing the rhythm sticks here. He loved the water tables and the construction site, as well (see pics above):
We also had a great time running through the mirror maze, although it is a bit disorienting!
We swung by the museum store for souvenirs (magnets for me and an airplane construction book for Seth), and then we were on our way! We ate dinner at Chili's and desert at Dairy Queen and called it a day... a very good day...
