It's Almost Time...

... to kick off year ten of our homeschooling adventure!  Where did the time go?

I feel amazingly well organized to start the school year this time around, which is kind of funny.  I have always wanted a "school room", but here I find myself in one of the smallest spaces we have ever inhabited, making it work.  A school hallway will have to do...  And it's doing just fine...

I am so thankful for the opportunity to educate my children at home.  I know it's not for everyone, but I'm glad it's for us.

Time to learn about the world...  And hopefully make it a better place...

Meet Me In St. Louie, Louie...

Can it be that Seth and Grace just finished up their second St. Louis quiz?  Time is flying...

We were fortunate to be coming from a part of the country that did not experience the winter storm, so our ride there was uneventful.  In fact, we were almost to St. Louis before we saw any snow, at all.  Other teams had to fight their way through the weather, and a few had to cancel or even started out on the trip and just couldn't quite make it, but thankfully everyone was safe.

I spent the weekend Quizmastering and had the opportunity to meet a lot of new people and to connect with a lot of old friends.  I think they all secretly like me for the candy that sits on my table, but I'm good with that.  Bribes aren't always bad, right?

Phil got to coach the MI District team, which was great, because he is most fully "in his element" when coaching.  The team took 10th place, overall, out of 34 all star teams!  Grace was 17th individually, and Mary was 19th.  I know that Grace was a little disappointed with her own quizzing and placement this time around, but when you consider that she was 45th at St. Louis, last year, and finished 12th in the world by the end of the season; I don't think there's really anything to cry about... mostly...

I did have a few issues with what I would call "dirty" quizzing, throughout the weekend.  Now, let's be real...  When our family walks into a quiz, the intensity level skyrockets!  People don't even try to talk to us in the middle of rounds.  We are focused.  We memorize the material, and we take the best jumps we can.  We don't mess around.  But there is a fine line between this kind of attitude and the one that says, "I am going to do whatever I have to do to win, even if that means taking jumps on questions that I could never hope to answer (ex. According to Rom...) or flat out lying in challenges and rebuttals".  I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, the most experienced Quizmaster out there.  But I've been a part of the quizzing world since 1994, and I'm just going to say that I don't put up with that stuff.  Don't try it in my room.  And that might sound harsh, but to this point I think I can count the number of quizzers who don't like to quiz in my room on one hand, so whatever.  Most quizzers are amazing!  There is something to be said for ethics.

As another note, if you catch us between rounds or at lunch, we really are fun people...

Alright...  That's another one in the books...

My Social Filters...

… are seriously deficient right now.  I do not think I have quite reached the point at which I will say or do catastrophically stupid things, but I recognize that I am dangerously close.  Let me give a few examples…

I came within moments of pulling over the Nazarene limousine, offering to buy coffee for the guy who has been stationed on the corner of Main and Broadway wearing a two way “turn or burn” sign (it doesn’t really say that, but it’s close enough), and then telling him exactly what I think about his theology and what a travesty it is, especially in this town where we have poured over five years into the lives of people who are anti-church, for him to be wearing that sign and making us all look like idiots!  Instead, I opted to go purchase lots of frozen food that I knew would not survive a long coffee shop chat.

That was, in itself, a pretty bad idea, because in a momentary memory lapse I forgot that I live in a small town and that going to the grocery store almost always requires me to talk to multiple people who know me.  It’s really hard to stand at the bakery making small talk while thinking, “I don’t understand why you walked away from our church”.  It also borders on embarrassing to be hiding out behind the day old bread cart because I recognize faces but can’t come up with names, or even contexts from which I should know people, to save my life.  The only redemptive thing about the grocery store was that I did not know the cashier or bagger (I usually look for people I recognize, but remember, I am avoiding conversation like the plague right now) and that all they were really interested in talking about was my opinion on whipped yogurt as opposed to regular yogurt.  Somehow, I managed to navigate that one alright…

I also almost gave my real opinion on VBS to a whole group of people with small children.  I didn’t, though…  I didn’t…

I don’t do “girl angry at the world” very well anymore.  It just seems so “early 20s” as opposed to “mid 30s” (I am 33…  does that still count as early 30s, or do I have to claim mid 30s at this point?)  But I am angry.  I am currently coping by hiding out at my house, hoping people don’t call, and listening to loud, angsty music from the late 1990s… and apparently by posting things to my blog that I should probably just leave unsaid…

You know what, though?  The more I think about it, I realize that I am less angry and more tired… exhausted… completely spent.  And I absolutely hate it when people waste my time.  I mean, we are talking #1 pet peeve (or if not, pretty close to it).  Each of us only gets so much time.  I’d like to use mine for things that ultimately matter… or at the very least for things I enjoy…

So if you should happen to find me with my mouth shut, please just smile and wave.  It’s better that way.  I’m busy putting myself back together again, and I am a really lousy multi-tasker.  I can’t pick up the pieces and filter everything I really want to say at the same time.

And Another Reason...

... the neighbors think we're crazy.

Grace has been doing much of her quizzing review, headed to regionals, outside.  Today she realized that she had about 20 minutes before her piano lesson and asked me if she could go outside to quote a couple of chapters.  It seemed to make sense to me, since there wasn't really anything else for her to do with this time.  Usually I peek out the window and find her swinging, Scripture portion in hand.  Today, this is how I found her:

No wonder we can't keep neighbors!  I mean, here is this kid, pacing and quoting Scripture out loud, and I'm pretty sure she was completely oblivious to the fact that she is carrying her really heavy bag of piano music as she does this (at least it wasn't raining yet)...  Actually, no.  That's not why we can't keep neighbors...  It probably has a lot more to do with the crazy woman following Grace around, snapping pictures...

I Think My Default...

… is going to be to post a picture of something I baked/cooked when there’s nothing else going on!

This was about the worst turn around I could have hoped for in transitioning from the insane busyness of my Tuesday to the relative quiet of my Wednesday.  On a day where I should have been able to catch up (and maybe get ahead), I found myself more exhausted than useful.  It’s going to help that for much of the season I will take the first leg of the Tuesday relay (music and piano) and Phil will take the second (basketball)… at least, I hope it’s going to help.

At any rate, about the most productive thing I did today was to fold a couple of loads of laundry and to make a batch of homemade soft pretzels.  I should probably just avoid Pinterest, because they don’t look as good as the ones from the site where I got the recipe, but they sure tasted amazing!

Just When I Think...

... I'm not going to have anything interesting to say today, Ian surprises me right at bedtime...

He says, "Mom there's something that you're going to have to help me build (pause) tomorrow (pause) at 10:00...

And of course I say, with great anticipation and an attempt to hide my laugh, "What?

To which Ian responds, "An amusement park!"

Well... I guess I have my work cut out for me, now, don't I?

I found it very interesting that Ian was so specific. Sometimes I feel like he must think that he needs to make an appointment to get my attention, particularly on a day filled with schoolwork for three older siblings and a somewhat cranky, demanding little sister who still has a cold... Not that Ian ever gets lost in the chaos... he makes sure of that... but still the very fact that he has this planned right down to the time was telling.

And I find myself thinking, "At least we got to read a bedtime story, just the two of us, tonight... and I wonder what kinds of cool things I could build in an amusement park, because surely he won't envision any rides that go up and down!"

Phil’s Graduation Trip, Day 6…

We’re home. I cannot believe I woke up, this morning, in Nampa, ID, and now I am sitting here typing in my house (specifically, I am in the closet in the Master Bedroom… long story)…

I could bore you with flight stories that aren’t that spectacular… airport pizza that is bigger than your head… planes that are so full you actually consider taking a voucher and waiting three more hours… babies that squirm all flight long and fall asleep right before touch down… security measures that “test” the juice in your sippy cups… TSA employees that go through your bags and break mirrors… and gigantic bottles of purple Gatorade… but I won’t. Let’s re-cap, instead…

God is a God of redemption…

“Home” might find you in a Freudian slip at “FBI Fridays”, if you’re not careful…

When you’re seven, you can experience the “best day of your life” on consecutive days, over and over again…

When you’re 31, you can, too…

We had hoped…

Jesus is hope…

Leaving Nampa was harder than I ever dreamed it would be…

I loved this trip…
