#11...

There are so many different ways I might have liked to title this post. I went with #11, because it is, in great part, about our 11th anniversary! Wow... 10 seemed like a big number last summer, but 11 seems just... wow... It's not at all that it feels as if we've been married "forever" as in this seems to go on and on and I'm getting tired of it. No, that's not it at all! 11 just seems like a really big number, because everyone thought the odds were kind of stacked against us from the beginning, and even though we have gone through some outrageously adverse life situations, we're still together. And we always will be... first and foremost, because we love each other deeply... always have... All these years later, I still hold fast to the belief that God put us here for each other. Yeah... that's good. It just wouldn't have lasted with anybody else...

So what do you do for an 11th anniversary? Well... to tell you the truth, I don't know what the protocol is! When we first got married, I kind of had in mind that you should do something special for the 10th anniversary, and I figured we might take a trip of sorts. However, as anniversary #10 rolled around, it became increasingly obvious to us that this just wasn't going to happen, because anything we did was going to have to include a nursing baby in tow! After much thought (but not too much), we decided to wait another year... And so we did...

As we tossed around options about what we might do, only a few things really stood out. And, since we still can't really afford to fly across the ocean in order to take a ride in a gondola, we were just a bit limited... We narrowed it down to a couple of options, and in the end, Cedar Point won out! Please... if you feel the need to laugh now, go ahead. It won't hurt my feelings. CP was a very special place to us during our dating years, and even though I'm getting old, I am still an adrenaline junkie! It was the perfect choice...

We stayed at Castaway Bay, the last of the major indoor waterparks located in Sandusky that we had not yet visited. The accommodations we very nice, including a waterside view and a TV that broadcast more than DVDs and videos (see previous post), so I was able to catch some Olympic moments without being out to all hours of the night!

We spent our first day at Soak City, enjoying the raging river, the wave pool, and a few slides. I took the opportunity to slip down a body slide, because it has been quite some time since I last rode one, and I wanted to prep myself for "dolphin plunge" in the fall. I do not usually care for body slides, as I hate going under the water at the end and filling my nose... and then consequently my throat with H2O instead of oxygen! Ironically, I enjoyed this particular body slide more than most, and it was Phil who came up looking for air. I thought about riding another one but figured why spoil the experience! We returned to Castaway Bay in the late afternoon and decided to stay there for the evening instead of using our CP starlight tickets. We ate at the TGIFridays that is connected to the hotel and were less than satisfied, but it was OK. Unfortunately, TGIFridays tends to disappoint more often than not as of late. Then, we went to the Castaway Bay waterpark, which was very nice. We enjoyed another wave pool, where we tried to do a little body surfing. Phil did much, much better than I did, which is to be expected since I have absolutely no athletic ability and little balance or depth perception! It was still great fun trying. We also rode a water coater for the first time and relaxed in the hot tub.

On Saturday morning (our actual anniversary), we headed straight for Cedar Point and were admitted one hour early, since we were resort guests! I began the day with 3 rides left that I had never ridden at CP. I have been trying to "conquer the park" for many years, but every time I get close they build something new, and I miss a season, or I am only there with the kiddos, so there were just a few that I was missing. We made a beeline for Millennium Force, and after less that 15 minutes in line knocked that number down to 2! I have to say, that was a great coaster! The lift hill seems like it will never end, and it's not much different on the way down... except it's faster! I kept my arms up most of the way, but you'll notice in the picture that they are on their way down. I have a bit of an aversion to keeping my arms up in tunnels, but if I'd known the pic. was coming, I'd have left them up. Of course, I have the classic Lisa on a roller coater look, because I am trying to avoid having the wind knocked out of me. It works. I just always look like I am going to blow chunks! Phil looks like he is analyzing the ride, which I found pretty humorous! The only drawback was that when we went to view our pic., it was initially unavailable, because someone behind us apparently made an inappropriate gesture. Why do people do that? At any rate, they were able to crop it and sell it to us, which is good, because if they hadn't we were getting right back in line! Here we are:

From there, we headed toward Frontier Town, where we took a second spin on Maverick. Last summer we came off the coaster absolutely raving. Although it is still going to rank in my top 5, our experience was not as smooth this time around. Tip: keep your head back! The Maverick pic. was seriously almost identical to the one from last year, except I was trying to give Phil a high 5 in the second shot, but he didn't know it. We didn't buy that one! We then walked on to Sky Hawk, which doesn't always have a really long line, but I have never seen it like this. I absolutely loved it! The sensation is basically the same as a pirate boat ride, but it is much bigger, and there is nothing in front of you. And with that, I sliced my ride list to 1!

A quick trip on the Mine Ride, and then, feeling as if our limits had already been tested for the morning, we decided to eat lunch. We had Chick-Fil-A, which is, of course, comparable to a "contemporary classic" for us. I'll let you think on that one if you really want to... After filling up with lots and lots of ice water, we decided to ride the train... and then we decided to ride it back... and at this point, I think we realized that we'd better get off while we had the chance, or we might just ride the train for the rest of the day as a good friend did once...

We jumped on the Gemini, which is still the greatest ride in the park, and I will likely continue to say this until the day they tear it down. It seems as though most CP patrons have completely lost the nostalgia for slapping high fives as the two trains pass, but our blue train was so far out in the lead for the entire race, start to finish, that it would have been difficult to reach anyone on the red train from our front seat! As I board the Gemini, I often remember the days when I was a kid at CP and the fact that Gemini was the largest coaster in the world
(and I would never have dreamed of getting on it)! Ah... how the times have changed!

From there we took a spin on Magnum, an old friend that I had not boarded in over a decade. In fact, I had only ridden Magnum that one other time... with my eyes closed all the way! What a difference 10+ years makes! We bought the pic., as we thought it was a nice update... hands up, eyes open, front seat:

Enough intense riding for the moment, I dragged Phil to Paddlewheel Excursions, where we waited in line for quite a while... hehehe... who would've thought? At about this time, Phil mentioned that he hadn't seen Top Thrill Dragster running all day. Funny, I thought... neither had I. Now, the "I have to conquer the park" side of me felt mildly disappointed. I mean... of all the days! I think it is accurate that we visited CP 11 times last summer, so we must have watched the Dragster rise and fall on at least a billion occasions! And here we finally have the opportunity to ride it, and it's not running? Ugh... On the other hand, the "I'm scared out of my mind when I even thing about getting on that thing" side of me was mildly relieved, I hate to admit... Just about then, up went the Dragster... empty... and back down it came, on the wrong side of the track. Then, up it went again, loaded, and down it came just fine. And after that... nothing... We continued to wait, rode Paddlewheel, endured all of the stupid jokes, and got off... all with no movement on TTD.

Since I was getting tired of carrying pictures around, and it was pretty hot, making air conditioning sound appealing, we rode the Sky Ride and went out to the parking lot in search of some relief in the car. And search is the key word here. We couldn't remember where we parked! After walking around together for a few minutes, Phil climbed up on the back of a truck, and I kept walking around. To tell you the truth, I was feeling a bit disoriented, anyway, having hit my head on the Sky Ride on the way out and then standing around in the heat. Thankfully, Phil finally found the car and called for me, and after a few minutes I felt better having cooled down!

Ready for some more riding, we re-entered the park, jumped back on the Sky Ride, and checked out the lines for Iron Dragon and Mantis. Both of them were quite long, and we decided not to wait. We walked over to Power Tower and took a quick ride on the up side. This is always fun, and is one of Phil's favorite rides. It was a little odd this time, however, as the guy to my left was scared out of his mind, and the guy to his left was singing... Can't say I've ever experienced that before...

When we exited the ride, a bit of courage overtook me, and since I had seen Dragster go a couple of times more, I started to walk toward the entrance. Phil asked me what I was doing, and I simply told him, "It's time!" We waited outside the line entrance for a few minutes, because they weren't letting anybody in. I think they were trying to determine if Dragster was going to continue to run or not. Eventually, they opened the entrance. So... we stood in the heat, as a few rides went. And then there was a delay, and we couldn't hear what the ride operator was saying, but we decided that we were already in line, so we might as well wait it out. Over the next 10-15 minutes, quite a few people left the line, and we slowly and steadily moved forward (but not into the shade). Finally, the ride operator announced that they were going to load the next set of trains! We cheered along with everyone else on the platform. After waiting a few more turns, we were finally seated on TTD! And the rest is history, my friends! The ride was awesome. The take off was like nothing I've ever felt before... as we crested the hill, the view was amazing (even without my glasses, which were stuffed in my underwear... uh... TMI... very long story...), and I started screaming, "We're on top! We're on top!" actually before we even got there. I threw my arms up near the end, so it would look like I was really cool in the pic... hehehe... couldn't let myself get away with that! At the end of the ride, I was just screaming about how I had ridden every ride in the park, and maybe everybody thought I was nuts, but I don't really care. The experience was amazing! Here it is on film:

Phil mentioned later that even though my quest to conquer the park is only representative of a few pieces of metal situated on an island somewhere on the face of the planet, it is rare that you actually get to complete something in life. And it may sound silly to some, but this was a real accomplishment for me. I'm proud. And... I would definitely ride it again...

Buy the way... the ride operator was "awesome man"... Yeah... you really had to be there...

After this experience, I'm not sure we really cared what we did next. We rode the Sky Ride again! We ate at Midway Market Buffet, which I would not recommend to my friends... or maybe even my enemies... Not worth the money, but we had coupons, so we only paid $5.00 total... including tip!

Then we did some shopping! And let me tell ya something... I almost never buy anything at CP! I bought a postcard (to scrapbook) and a Coaster Challenge Check-Off T-Shirt (which doesn't even list all of the coasters, but that's another story in itself! We took the Sky Ride (if you've been counting this is time number 4, which is rather amazing, since traditionally I hate the Sky Ride) to the middle of the park, where I also bought a set of Peanuts glasses, which are really cute and weren't too expensive, and we got some bubble wands for the kids.

After that, we walked up near the front of the park and hung out at the arcade for a bit. Phil played Cyclone (an arcade game at which he excels... oh the memories... hehehe...) and won over 200 tickets on the first hit! We played a few other games and had our pics. taken in the photo booth (see beginning of post). Phil redeemed his tickets for a Maverick mug that is pretty cool! Then we took all of our souvenirs out to the car (which was not nearly so hard to find this time around).

And now I am getting confused about when we rode the Sky Ride and when we didn't. Perhaps we hadn't yet ridden it 4 times... or maybe we rode it again for time #5... or maybe we didn't ride it at all, but we decided to check out the lines for Mantis and Iron Dragon again and found that they were still just too long for our liking!

So we headed for Raptor, which was a very nice ride at dusk, just as it always is. They don't take pictures on Raptor anymore... or if they do, they don't show them at the end of the ride. Instead, there is a DVD. We hammed it up, but you only get to see a few seconds of your video when you exit... unless you want to put out 20 bucks for it, which we didn't!

And now, having ridden most of what we wanted to ride, and feeling sort of sleepy, I went in search of frozen lemonade... because it is oh so good! Unfortunately, when I ordered it at my usual lemonade stop, I was given a rather average looking, not frozen at all, cup of lemonade, which I refused! I decided that a frozen cherry fruit drink would do, but at the next stop, the cherry wasn't frozen... only blue raspberry... yuck! Stop number 3... just kiwi and strawberry! Does it never end? Finally, at stop number 4, I got my frozen cherry drink, which was delicious... In fact, so delicious that even Phil wanted a couple of sips!

To finish off our day, we waited in line for the Giant Wheel. Who doesn't want to ride the ferris wheel at night, right? It was a wonderful ride, and I always like to look out over the lake and then back at the park and to marvel at the wonder of everything God has made and everything He has also allowed us to create for enjoyment!

We left the park around 9:45, and went back to Castaway Bay...

The next morning, we woke up on the late side and decided to give the Castaway Bay waterpark one more shot. We rode the water coaster again, splashed around in the wave pool some more, and ended up in the hot tub. We did just a little bit of shopping in the gift shops and then decided that even though we had tickets left to use, it would be better to start our return journey and to take it slow. After all, we had a wonderful time at CP, so why blow it! We managed to get through a whole day without any whining or screaming (well... except on the coasters, of course), and that is unusual, because remember we have four little people who are typically tagging along, but the truth is, we did our share of fighting at CP before we had the kids, so it really was a remarkable day... hehehe!

We took our time, stopping to shop and see a few trains along the way. Eventually, we ended up in Findlay, where we had dinner at Cheddars. I love Cheddars.

We arrived home around 7:30, in time to see the kids (and Grandma and Grandpa) and tell them about our trip before bed time.

Ah... It was a wonderful weekend!

TV... and the Olympics... and Politics...

I almost never watch TV... this is partly due to the fact that our television gets no channels. I am not exaggerating in any way, whatsoever. We literally get NO channels... not even local stuff... or PBS... or anything! Our 17" television's soul purpose is to play DVDs... through the PS2... yeah...

Anyhow... I absolutely love the Olympic Games. If you think I am retarded because of this, well... that's your problem! For the past week+, I have been finding alternative watching sites, so that I could take in all of the exciting Olympic moments... no TV, but hey, I watched each of Michael Phelp's 8 gold medal swims, the women's team gymnastics competition and all-around, the men's team gymnastic competition and all around, the end of the women's marathon, and a few rounds of beach volleyball... live. So far, I've only set off one alarm, causing a building to be thoroughly searched at 1:00am. Oops... long story... Hopefully I'll get to catch some track and field next week as well as the women's beach volleyball finals.

In addition, I am finding that it is increasingly easier to watch certain things via the Internet. It's not perfect, but it works most of the time. To tell you the truth, I was about 95% sure that I had finally made my presidential decision... until the civil forum on Saturday. Now I am up in the air about it again, and this is rather unsettling, since I have never waffled for this long about a vote. I am not necessarily giving this information to get feedback. I know that half of you think that Obama is the anti-Christ and the other half of you think that McCain is a killing machine... doesn't matter. I still haven't decided what I think yet...

Hmmm... Perhaps this post is kind of pointless... like TV...

Just A Little Amusing...

Our one and only trip to Cedar Point for 2008 with the kids was fantastic! This was actually a youth group trip, and I drove separately, behind the church bus, which was a little more exhausting than when we did the same thing back in 2005… much longer drive this time around…

The quick breakdown…

Seth rode 26 rides, including 8 new ones! The high number of new rides is thanks in great part to the addition of “Planet Snoopy”! The kids actually rode most of these attractions at Geauga last year, before the ride side of that park was closed by Cedar Fair… shhh… no sense letting them know the rides weren’t completely “new”… His new rides also included 2 coasters, the Corkscrew and the Magnum! He loved them both, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a smile as big as the one he had when the Magnum came out of it’s final tunnel! Of course… had to buy the pic…

Grace also rode 26 rides, although many of them were different than Seth’s… go figure! Her 2 new coasters included the Corkscrew and the Gemini (which is sort of becoming a “right of passage” in our family, I think). Of course, she loved them both. She whined the entire time Seth and Daddy were on the Magnum, because it just wasn’t fair…

Caleb totaled 21 rides, leaving him with only 2 rides in the entire park that he is tall enough to ride but has not yet ridden. One of those was closed when we tried to get on it. Caleb tried with all his might to stretch his 42” to 46”, but he just wasn’t even remotely close enough to slip onto the Iron Dragon this time around. He kept saying, “I’m too short”… He was bummed, but hey… that’s life at CP when you’re only 4… One of the most exciting parts about Caleb's trip, for me, was that he actually hugged Snoopy! In the past, Caleb has been terrified of characters. There is hope for our Disney trip...

Ian rode 12 rides, and we learned that he is very good at wiggling out of seat belts, even when you are supposed to need a key to get out! I don’t think he especially enjoys spinning, but he did have lots of fun!

Phil enjoyed 13 rides, and next time we take the kids to Planet Snoopy he will have to do all of the riding with them in order to improve his ride percentage (and to keep me from getting sick)! He did take his first trip on MaxAir (which I got to enjoy last summer), and he thought it was alright for a “spinny ride”…

I came in with 19 rides, including 5 new ones (thank you, Planet Snoopy). I still lack three experiences to “conquer” the whole park. Look for updates later in the month. I plan to finally put Skyhawk, Millenium Force, and Top Thrill Dragster (uh… I think) behind me before this season is through…

I think I can... I think I can... I think I can...

...Catch up! But maybe I can't...

At any rate, be looking for updates soon, including our only trip to Cedar Point with the kids this summer. There is still much going on, and I doubt the load is going to get much lighter as I start school next week and the kids start right after Labor Day! And then there are piano lessons... and soccer... and swimming... and vacations... and field trips... and quizzing (imagine that)!

For today, here's the long postponed posting of the VBS slideshow (several weeks later)! I stayed up until 5am creating this one (long story), which is really late! This week I'm only staying up until midnight... or maybe 1am, depending on how long the prime time Olympic coverage lasts! I never claimed I wasn't an absolute moron...

Tell Me It Hasn't Been Almost Two Months...

... Since I last blogged!

Alright... So, our summer so far...

I don't really even know where to begin. I just did a quick digital flip through all the pics, and there's too much...

We went to Indiana Beach. It is kind of like a county fair on drugs... uh... steroids, to be exact. Although we had fun, I don't think I ever really need to do it again. Both Caleb and Ian attempted to jump out of the kiddie boats and into the water. I think that was the end of the day for me, and it was only the third or fourth ride. Grace loved her carousel horse, which she named Belle. I didn't think we were going to be able to go home without it. I came home bruised from the roller coaster with no seat belts, and since I am a sucker for my third child, I could not resist when he said, "Mommy, I select you to ride the Tilt-A-Whirl with me!" So I got sick, too. I literally threw up in my mouth. Yuck. I will no longer be selected for the Tilt-A-Whirl. I thought I made that decision last summer... Here are a few pictures... but not the ones that Phil took of me on the aforementioned ride. They were not flattering:

Final analysis: "There's No More Than Corn in Indiana!"

Shortly after the Indiana Beach experience, Phil took some vacation time. It was that "use it or lose it" kind of vacation time, and we didn't have a whole lot of vacation money just sitting around, since we are saving for our Disney trip this fall, so we just did a variety of things kinda local...

We went to Indy and purchased memberships to the zoo. Once you're family is this size, it is almost always worthwhile to purchase a membership anywhere you go. Sometimes it is even cheaper than buying a day pass!

I remember why I love the zoo. It's so relaxing! For the most part, the kids just walk around from exhibit to exhibit and stand there and watch each animal for a really long time, and no one seems like they're in a hurry. We all tend to be especially fond of ocean animals, so I thought the kids would surely like to pet the sharks... not so. They all stood there shouting, "Mommy, don't let it eat you!" That's OK, though. I loved petting the sharks! Everyone enjoyed the dolphin show, and we have now learned about 56,472 different ways to conserve energy. We know a lot about lightbulbs, too... When we got to the giraffes it was feeding time, so we had a little pep talk. It went something like this:

Me: "Now, if we stand in this line and pay $1.00 apiece to feed the giraffe, then when we get to the front, you are feeding the giraffe. Is that clear?"

Kids: "Yes, Mom. We want to feed the giraffe!"

And you know what? They actually did it! Well, except for Ian who started screaming at the top of his little lungs when the giraffe got in his face and tried to lick him. I fed the giraffe Ian's giraffe food. Poor giraffe...

We missed the elephant bathing, so Caleb didn't get to pet the elephant. Disappointing, but that's what memberships are for, right?

It also began to storm at some point, so we didn't get to play on the playground for long or at the waterpark at all, but hey... ditto above...

We left in the afternoon and went in search of Chick-Fil-A at the mall, which would have been great if it wasn't Sunday... We ended up eating at Steak and Shake and got some great new accessories for our wardrobes, which all six of us wore through the streets of downtown Indy.

Then, we stayed overnight at Holiday Inn Express and swam in the pool and watched an old Lucy and Desi movie, which the kids thought was kind of boring. In the morning we enjoyed the new, expanded Holiday Inn Express breakfast, minus Cinnamon Rolls, because they were out. We swam some more. Then we went home...

Quickly... because Seth had a baseball game. We got there just in time for him to change into his uniform and run to the dugout!

Then we experienced what everyone is talking about when you hear about the intensity of Little League playoff games. Seth played on a really great team with super coaches, and he had a very good season. The playoffs were like nothing I've ever seen before. I was seriously a bit concerned that we were going to end up in the middle of a fight a couple of times. Our team won in the first round, and we were pretty much kicking butt in the second round until the other team started changing the rules and really rattled our kids. We ended up losing, and I was pretty ticked to tell you the truth. It was about all I could do to restrain myself from saying a few choice things to the coaches of the other team at the end of the game. We were playing against the team that our church sponsored, though, so I managed to keep my mouth shut... Seriously, though... It's Little League! There is no reason to throw a clipboard across the field!

At any rate, it was still a good end to a great season. There was a team party later in the month, and Seth got his first real trophy, about which he was elated. Seth also had a lot of fun at the party, because it was on "our turf". He thought it was pretty cool that he knew where everything was and could tell everybody about it!

A couple of days after the final game, Phil and the kids left for Michigan and Balloonfest! Although I really missed seeing family and enjoying the balloons together, I did not go and instead embarked on an adventure that I shall call "Mommy Retreat". Even though the idea was for me to have some time for myself, just relaxing, I decided that it really couldn't hurt to stay up until 3:00am that first night, painting the boys' bedroom while talking on the phone with Katie. I was exhausted and covered in paint by early morning, but I felt very good about having accomplished something. Once I got all of the paint off, I proceeded to leave town.

I then enjoyed a full body massage and manicure, did more shopping than I ought to, ate whatever I wanted without sharing, and checked into a hotel suite with a king sized bed and my own jacuzzi. For the next two days, I only emerged to get breakfast (they had cinnamon rolls) and to attempt to use the vending machine that ate my dollar. The rest of the time, I pampered myself with various home spa stuff, slept, listened to music, and watched more TV than I typically watch in a year. I have now seen John and Kate plus Eight and Hannah Montana, in case anyone is wondering...

It was a wonderful experience, and I really needed it, but I missed my family by check out time, and I was glad to be on my way...

Since I still had a few hours before they would arrive home, I shopped a bit more, and then I went and had my hair cut and highlighted and my eyebrows waxed. It was fun.

After Phil and the kids got home, we hung out for a little while and shared stories about our weekend adventures. Phil and I then proceeded to get ready to go see Bill Cosby! I grew up watching The Cosby Show, and I have always liked Bill Cosby. It was a wonderful show, and we laughed very hard through most of it. I took a few pictures, even though I wasn't really supposed to. I think everyone there took a few pictures...
We've also done a lot of fun, almost normal things this summer. We got a trampoline... but I had to have one with an enclosure around it, or I absolutely would not let my kids jump. It has been great. I also purchased three slip and slides. I realize that most people find that just one is more than enough, but it seemed like a really great idea at the time to buy several and hook them all together in order to create a race track... well... anyways... We are enjoying our yard and the area parks, as well:
Our second trip to the zoo was also a lot of fun. We went with our friends Monica and Keegan. We saw the dolphin show again, but this time we sat in the splash zone... It is called the splash zone for a reason! We made it to the elephant bathing, and we got to pet the elephant. And everyone petted the sharks! We also played at the waterpark, even though it was cold! Keegan even got a job at the zoo, sweeping up... hehehe:
Since I figured we hadn't been busy enough, I enrolled all of the kids in camps for the same week! Seth went to soccer camp, while Grace, Caleb, and Ian went to music camp. We all had a fantastic time, and now I am figuring out how to finance extracurricular activities for the school year. I seriously might have a fundraiser... Public schools do it... why not homeschools?

And, our latest adventure (at least the latest one I'm going to write about right now) was a trip to King's Island for Spiritfest. We took Seth and Grace with us, while Caleb and Ian stayed at home with Grandma. Overall, I'd say it was a good time, but it is kind of difficult to try to fit in all of the rides around the concerts. I will say that I now know it is possible to run from the far back corner of the waterpark all the way to the amphitheater in just under 15 minutes. I did this wearing Fit Flops, which I would not recommend (the run, not the shoes). We had a fantastic time rockin' out to Stellar Kart and Toby Mac, and Crowder was alright, too...
So, it has taken me two days to write this post. I do not necessarily expect to return to daily blogging until the summer is finished, but I hope it won't be this long again between posts, because it takes forever to write them, they aren't nearly as detailed as I would like, and I'm sure it takes forever to read them, too. If you made it this far, many congratulations!

Meltdown...

Seriously, don't laugh! You know you've finally lost it when you spend an hour on the computer attempting to create a cartoon version of yourself... Is this the kind of thing that requires therapy? hehehe...

Alright, so I think I did fairly well...

This is me on a very good, straight hair day... 50 pounds lighter, because the "plus size" option was really plus size, and I don't think I'm quite that big...

Now that my cartoon self is dressed and wearing make-up, maybe I should do something about the real self... sitting here at the computer... wasting time...

Archived Slideshows and Stories...

I love these slideshows...

I love these stories...

My kids have grown, and it's time to put some new ones up, but I couldn't quite let these go...

To those of you who love and pray for these little people, thank you! I can't even begin to tell you how much it means...

I love these kids...

Seth...
First kids really have it rough in a lot of ways. Sure... they get the constant attention of Mommy and Daddy for the first part of their lives, but they are also our guinea pigs. We experiment with first babies, because we've never done this before. I prayed for a baby, and Seth was the answer to that prayer. Seth Matthew means, "God's Appointed Gift". I was only 21 when Seth arrived. I pretty much thought I had it all figured out. I had taken care of other people's babies for years, so I'd had some practice. But it's different when the baby is your own. I am a serious type A personality. I wanted everything to be absolutely perfect, and in the process of trying to make it turn out that way, I made a whole lot of mistakes. Somehow, even though I was extremely comfortable with babies, Seth made me nervous. I guess it doesn't matter so much when you mess up with someone else's baby... but when it's yours... Seth has not one, but TWO baby books. They are both kept meticulously. Seth was a bottle fed baby, because I was afraid I was starving him after just a few days of trying to nurse. While we were waiting for Seth to arrive, we made a list of everything a baby could possibly "need". We had two baby showers and got much of what was on that list. What we didn't get… well… we bought. Phil had to put the crib together twice to get it… uh… "just right"… and by the time Seth actually slept in it, he had a toddler bed. During Seth's first year of life, he was left in a nursery only a handful of times, and he was left with a "babysitter" only once, for a couple of hours... that was Grandma... and I was just down the street. I think I called at least twice. Seth and I took walks often and played at the park... and I'm still kicking myself for selling his stroller in a garage sale... several years later. Seth has always been highly intelligent and extremely passionate. And from the moment he was born, I have had a fierce instinct to protect him from being hurt by others... and I still do…

Grace...
Grace is unique, because she is our only little princess. And even though she's a "girlie-girl"... well... she's tough as nails, too. Grace was born just thirteen months after Seth, and I refer to her as the "greatest surprise of my life". When I say that, I really mean it. I was thrilled about Grace. Grace Anne means, "Gracious Blessing". I was 22 when Grace arrived, and you'd think I would have learned a thing or two. And I thought so, too. I figured that after the first amazing year with Seth, I knew how to do this "Mommy thing". And I still made mistakes. But Grace didn't make me nervous. I figure she's probably saving that for the teenage years. Grace has a beautiful baby book, but I didn't add her birth certificate to it until she was five. That's what happens when you're a PK, nearly from day one, and your birth certificate doesn't get ordered for quite some time and then gets lost in the midst of some move. We had a baby shower for Grace and got tons of beautiful clothes. We knew we were having a girl. We didn't have to buy much, because we had all of Seth's baby things, but we learned pretty quickly that girls are more expensive, anyway. By the time Grace started sleeping in the crib, she was old enough to jump out of it to come find us in the morning. I will always remember the sound of those little feet. Grace "grew up" in church nurseries. She stayed with a babysitter for half a night, an hour away, when she was only 2 months old. It was necessary, but you'd better believe I called... more than once! Grace and I read books... over... and over... and over. And now she reads to me. Grace was independent from the moment she arrived. I have always been captivated by her personality, and I hope the rest of the world is, as well...

Caleb...

Caleb's story has grown to something of epic proportion… at least in my mind. He first "arrived" during one of the most difficult times in my life. He filled me with hope, and I was absolutely in love with him from the moment I laid eyes on him. Caleb Ethan means, "Bold, Faithful, and Strong". I was 24 when Caleb arrived, and I really had learned a few things about life… but not enough to avoid making some mistakes. I was determined to hold Caleb as much as possible and to enjoy every moment. And I did. And I still do. Caleb's baby book was finished a few months ago. It was quite the project, because the hospital lost his wrist band (which I did find later), and the photographer lost his baby pictures (which were never recovered). But we took tons of our own pictures of Caleb, and his baby book is quite complete. Funny, everyone said I wouldn't be able to keep up with it once baby # 3 arrived… Our church gave us a card shower, and we used the money to buy new crib bedding and to replace some of the baby things that had been worn out by Seth and Grace or discarded by us. He loves his "airplane blankie", but I still don't know why I bothered with the rest of the bedding. He slept in our bed (at least part of the night) until Ian arrived. Caleb spent lots of time in the nursery and more time with Grandma (and even other babysitters)… but I still called. Caleb has done most everything right by my side. I love to play with him, but mostly we snuggle. Caleb has always been very sweet, and I hope when he recovers from the "terrible twos" he still will be…

Ian...
Ian... We first learned about him in the midst of getting ready to take our first ever family vacation… to Disney, nonetheless. Looking back on that, it is quite fitting. Although Ian is less than a year old, it feels like he has always been a part of our family. Even from the start, he has simply "belonged" with us, in everything we do. I cannot imagine life without him. Ian Justice means, "God is Gracious and Just". I am now 27, and I've learned more than I ever wanted to in some ways, but I know I have a long way to go, too. I will make mistakes here and there… probably far more than I'd care to admit. But I'm still trying to get everything just perfect. Being the 4th baby has some perks… at least around here. Digital cameras and technology, for example, have guaranteed that he will be the most photographed baby of all time and that his scrapbook will look quite professional… In fact, he is the only one who has professional pictures from the hospital (as mentioned earlier, Caleb's were lost, and no one ever came to take Seth's or Grace's). There was no shower, but we do have good friends and family who sent gifts. And I think I went a little off the deep end with my own purchases… Ian has a wipes warmer… cloth diapers… and his own little "nest" for sleeping in our bed. He is a pampered baby. The crib is set up, but let's face it… it's just for looks. So far, Ian is a little bit too "Mommy dependent" to enjoy extended time in a nursery or with a babysitter, but when he's ready to branch out a little more, on his own, believe me... I'll call. Ian is blessed with a big brother who makes up creative games to play with him, a big sister who is like a second little mommy, and a best friend who will all too soon be his partner in crime… And although I haven't figured out just what special things he'll like to do, I am sure enjoying just holding him and watching him grow…

My Pumpkins Are Growing!!!

So... I never really reported on my interesting little gardening attempt...

I have wanted to grow a garden for some time. I just have never been in a position to do it...

I am still probably not in a position to do it, but it is one of those things where I finally said to myself, "Are you going to keep on wanting to do this your whole life, or are you going to just do it?" Then I answered myself by heading for the back yard with a shovel...

It is more difficult to dig up dirt than I'd imagined... and may I mention here that I do not like worms... In the end, I ended up with a very tiny patch of ground, oh probably 3x6 feet at best... I was very proud...

I planted many, many different kinds of veggies... (and fruits, but I think they are all dead)...

I cannot remember exactly what veggies I planted... or where... but I do see a few green things emerging from the ground that I don't think are weeds, so we'll go with it...

When I looked out the kitchen window, however, I got really excited, because I saw some real plants in my garden! Of course, I ran right outside, and to my delight I recognized them as the pumpkins (this is only because you have to plant pumpkins a little differently than everything else).

I ran back inside shouting, "My Pumpkins are Growing"... You are supposed to imagine this being said something like you envision Paul Revere shouting, "The British are Coming" to get the full effect... Of course, the kids wanted to see them, but I explained that they really only look like a bunch of green leaves right now, so that lost it's appeal pretty quickly...

Who knows if anything else will sprout, but to tell you the truth, if I end up with four decent sized carving pumpkins from this my first gardening attempt, I'll take it...

And... next year... I think I'll hire someone with a rototiller...

"Words to Build a Life On"

As promised, here are the lyrics for "Words to Build a Life On"... Amazing song... It speaks for itself...

These are words to build a life on
These are Your words how can they be mine
These are words to build a life on
These are Your words I want them to be mine

Blessed are the poor
Blessed are the weak
Blessed are the ones
Who can barely speak

Blessed in your hurt
Blessed in your pain
Blessed when your teardrops
Are falling down like rain

Blessed when you're broken
Blessed when you're blind
Blessed when you're fragile
When you have lost your mind

Blessed when you're desperate
Blessed when you're scared
Blessed when you're lonely
Blessed when you've failed

Blessed when you're beat up
Blessed when you're bruised
Blessed when you're tore down
Blessed when you're used

These are words to build a life on
These are Your words how can they be mine
These are words to build a life on
These are Your words I want them to be mine

Blessed when you're heartbroke
Blessed when you're fired
Blessed when you're choked up
Blessed when you're tired

Blessed when the plans
That you so carefully laid
End up in the junkyard
With all the trash you made

Blessed when you feel like
Giving up the ghost
Blessed when your loved ones
Are the ones who hurt you most

Blessed when you lose your
Own identity
Then blessed when you find it
And it has been redeemed

Blessed when you see what
Your friends can never be
Blessed with your eyes closed
Then blessed you see Me

These are words to build a life on
These are Your words how can they be mine
These are words to build a life on
These are Your words I want them to be mine

Blessed when you're hungry
Blessed when you thirst
Cause that's when you will eat of
The bread that matters most

Blessed when you're put down
Because of me you're dissed
Because of me you're kicked out
They take you off their list

You know you're on the mark
You know you've got it right
You are to be my salt
You are to be my light

So bring out all the flavour
In the feast of this My world
And light up all the colours
Let the banner be unfurled

Shout it from the rooftops
Let the trumpets ring
Sing your freaking lungs out
Jesus Christ is King!

Jesus is my Saviour
Jesus is divine
Jesus is my answer
Jesus is my life

These are words to build a life on
These are Your words how can they be mine
These are words to build a life on
These are Your words I want them to be mine

Give us ears that we may hear them
voice that we may sing them
life that we may live them
hope that we may give them
hearts that we can feel them
eyes that we can see them
thoughts that we may think them
tongues that we may speak Your words

One Step Forward...

... Two Steps Back

Even slow progress is not supposed to be this slow.

This could apply to lots... and lots... and lots... alright already... and lots of areas of my life lately.

I am tired...
