Rogue One Spoilers...

It seems that there is some interest regarding how I felt about Rogue One.  I have done very little movie reviewing as of late, and this is going to be relatively short and surely not comprehensive.  There are spoilers.  So, seriously, if you don't want to read any spoilers, close this tab right now.  I do not want to be responsible for anyone's ruined movie going experience...

SPOILERS COMING...  This is your last chance to turn back...

*I'll start with this, because it won't spoil the movie, just in case you're still accidentally reading.  Our biggest issue, as a family, was the voluminous number of inappropriate previews.  We almost always go to MJR, but this was an AMC.  We are incredibly careful about what our kids see, and the previews (22 full minutes of them) were worse than any movie they have ever seen.  Super frustrating.

*Apparently there was a ton of re-filming for this movie.  They did not even use the "I rebel" scene from the trailers, and I was incredibly disappointed about that.  I mean, I bought an "I rebel" t-shirt.  Seth says it is now obsolete...

*The story line was basically good, but it was a true war story.  They did a masterful job of connecting it to episode IV, but it had a much darker feel than most of Star Wars.  Along those lines, I did think it was an incredible testament to the cost of war, and that's something we don't always see in entertainment media.  So, I appreciated that.

*Everybody dies.  Star Wars fans should have been prepared for this, but somehow I didn't consider that this would be necessary for the plot to be consistent with episode IV.  It threw me a little bit.  The story, itself, was not developed enough to create deep emotional attachment to the characters (you just can't do that in a couple of hours), but it was a little shocking by the end, when I realized no one was going to survive.  It took me awhile to process.

*It's definitely not a movie for small children.  Historically, I am conservative in my assessment of appropriate age levels, but I would not have been comfortable viewing this film with anyone younger than Caleb (age 12, and he was with us).  Even then, you have to know your kids.  My oldest two would not have been ready for this movie at twelve.

*Final scene with Princess Leia?  Well, yeah... awesome!

Alright, that's all for now...  May the Force be with you...

Mockingjay Part 1, A Review...

So... last night I settled into a seat in a crowded, but not full, theater, with a lot of pretty funny perfect strangers around me, who did some whistling... and yelling... and gasping.... and watched the premier of Mockingjay, Part 1.  It was a little bit of a different experience for me than the first two films, because I did not have time to re-read the trilogy before I went to see this movie.  This morning, I am trying to determine if that had something to do with the fact that I found Mockingjay, Part 1 to be the best of the three adaptations, so far, hands down.  But I don't really think that was it.

Spoilers to follow...

First, let me say, that content-wise, they got this one right.  I was terribly disappointed when the first two big screen installments took a series that had a grand total of one swear word spread over 1,155 pages and peppered the films with profanities and the misuse of God's name.  I'm not going to get into all of that, again, because if you really want to know what I thought about it, you have probably already read my previous reviews or you can look them up now.  It was mildly surprising, and definitely a welcome change, that they finally decided to cut it out with this movie.  Can we thank new screenwriters for this?  I hope so.  Knowing that they filmed Mockingjay, Part 1 and Mockingjay, Part 2 together, I am hopeful that I'll be able to have the same kind of experience next fall.

They have, again, avoided the addition of any overt sexual stuff in this movie.  I found it interesting how they chose to present Finnick's story of what is essentially human trafficking  during Peeta's rescue.  Not that that's any different from how this happens in the book.  It's not.  But while reading the book, we were not privy to the information about how Peeta was rescued, so it feels as if Finnick's story takes a bit of a back seat to everything else that is going on, simultaneously, on the screen.

Clearly there are some violent scenes.  I don't think anyone would expect anything different, and, in fact, there would be no way to show the horror of civil war without these.  So, some reviewers might give a cautionary warning about the violence, but I am not going to do so, except to remind you that this is not a film for children.  I can't say what age I would recommend for this type of depiction of war.  It's not for my kids (as a reminder, my oldest is 14).

But...  I can recommend this movie, without hesitation, to adults.  Well... almost without hesitation.  I did not feel that I could recommend the first two movies, so to recommend this one is, essentially, to recommend that you begin in the middle of the story, without a guarantee that the end will be worth watching...

And now, the storyline.  I felt like this film was far more detail oriented than the others.  The little things matter to me.  For example, they found the right cat to play Buttercup.  I'm not sure, exactly, what to do with the plot hole that is caused by switching cats, but the one I saw yesterday was definitely the right one.  How many of my readers are laughing at me right now?  Never mind.  Don't answer that!

I think they also got most of the one-liners in there that I would have considered essential.  Another re-read, and I may have to recant that statement, but I'm pretty sure I was going to be OK with the movie as long as Finnick said, "I takes ten times as long to put yourself back together as it does to fall apart," which he did.

I thought they handled The Hanging Tree amazingly well, although I think non-readers of the series might be a little confused about where this song came from.  I loved the lake.  I wish they'd bothered to use it in the first two films.  And... the pearl.  Again, confusion for non-readers.  Does Peeta even give Katniss the pearl in the second movie?  Because I almost think that's something I found conspicuously missing, and now, here it is.  Little things like this made me feel like, throughout this movie, they were sort of trying to fix the things that were botched in the first two.  I would definitely welcome some commentary on that.

Effie...  here you are in district 13!  I really liked what they did with Effie, although I am still a bit disappointed that Katniss' prep team has been all but missing, throughout.  I understand that you can only develop so many characters, and they have had a lot of characters to develop, and I am just about ready to give up the prep team for this reason, but I am concerned about the missing scene where Katniss finds them chained and mistreated in what is, essentially, a dungeon in District 13.  District 13 was a little too happy, and President Coin was entirely too likeable in this film.  I'm trying to figure out where they're going with that.  Is it for the shock value later?  I'm not sure.

I think they cast the new characters for this movie very well.  Pollux was always a favorite of mine in the books, and he was exactly how I imagined him.  Boggs was fantastic.  It did just occur to me, though, that Katniss doesn't step on his nose in the movie.  I think she should have, but as long as she vomits all over him, next time, we'll call it good.

I have seen some reviews that describe this movie as slow moving, a two hour long preview, etc.  In my opinion, the whole franchise would have been better off if they had split every book into two parts or made every movie four hours long (it's not unheard of... consider Lord of the Rings).  The slow moving, detail oriented story is what we all spent hours upon hours reading, isn't it?  Most of what frustrated me in the first two movies, they have corrected here.  Still...  there is no fixing the disconnects, because of what was missing in the other films.  Anybody want to start begging for re-makes of The Hunger Games and Catching Fire?

One last thought.  Haymitch.  Does anybody think they might be intentionally leaving out all of the details of his life, at this point, because there really is a prequel in the works?  To this point, I have seen nothing about this, and as far as I know, I'm the only one asking, but come on...  The story would be amazing...  You would think that with the revenue that would be all but guaranteed this would be floating out there somewhere...

And, that's it.  Go have some lamb stew for lunch, or something.

Seventeen...

Aren't we cute?
Oh, wait.  This one might be more realistic:

We dropped the kids off at Grandma and Grandpa's for 24 hours and celebrated.  We saw "The Giver", which was excellent, and had dinner at Texas Roadhouse, which was also excellent, per normal.

I am so blessed to be sharing my life with this man.

Let's start working on 18...

Happy 7th Birthday, Ian!!!

Oh, the time goes fast...

I can hardly believe that Ian is seven, but it seems that's always the way it goes!  He was such a trooper, today, taking pictures out in the snow!  One of these years we'll have to get back to Florida on his birthday, for some warm weather outside shots, but I think these turned out really good, despite the freezing temperatures!

We always try to make Ian's birthday extra special, since it's kind of rough to have your birthday on the day after Christmas!  Today we celebrated at Chuck-E-Cheese, and we also went to see "Frozen", which we liked, a lot!

They really love Chuck-E-Cheese:

Secretly, there is one thing I like about the
Rat Infested Cardboard Pizza Palace:
Ian chose orange cake, orange frosting, and orange cream ice cream for dessert... no surprises there!  His packages were filled with Lego, Kinex, books, dinosaurs, and play-doh!  Overall, I think Ian thought it ranked right up there as one of the best birthdays ever!

There's that orange cake:

And the presents:

And... what really matters...
We love this kid:

Oh, Saturday...

... how I have missed you.

We have had such a busy few months!  Today we finally had time to get the Christmas decorations up (better late than never) and to watch a couple of Christmas movies (How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966) and The Polar Express).

Dinosaur Camp, Day 5...

We made it to the end of the week!  The truth is, my favorite part of the day was when Seth and Grace came busting through the back door and talked, non-stop, about camp until the only thing left to do was watch the camp highlights video!  I love how much they love camp.  I also love how good it feels to have them home again!

But before they came home, there was much left to do in the realm of the dinosaurs!

So... last week I cleaned out the school/art closet.  You would not believe the treasures I found buried in there!  Among them was an unopened package of face paint in a variety of colors.  Who knows how old it was, but I thought I'd better give it a try.  May I present the cutest dinosaurs ever:

M-Rex:

Triantops:

Tricurlytops:

Oh, come now...
This is the face you would make, too...
If you were about to be attacked by three roaring dinosaurs:

I proceeded to pack a dinosaur picnic (boiled dinosaur eggs, Jell-O dinosaur eggs, dinosaur fruit snacks, dinosaur PBJ, if you've been reading, this week, you get the picture) and to load my little monsters in the van for a trip to "Dinosaur Park"!  We have not been there in years.  It is dirty, and sometimes the inhabitants border on creepy.  But... you know... it has dinosaurs!  We invited friends (I hope that doesn't immediately put me on the bad friend list - I promise we'll invite them to a cleaner park next time) and had a ton of fun!

Picnic Time:

Riding Tyrannosaurus Rex:

Oh look!  Another one of our kind:

Loving on the Brontosaurus:

"Mom!  Take a picture!"

This "baby" still loves to swing...
I'm going to hang onto that for as long as I can:

After a couple of hours of melting in the sun, I let the kids sit on the couch sipping water and watching more from "The Land Before Time" series until their eyes glazed over.

I did manage to hang much (although not quite all) of our dinosaur drawings from the week:

It's been fun.  I think maybe next summer we'll try pirate camp...

Dinosaur Camp, Day 4...

We're winding down now...

Today was an excellent day for dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets and dinosaur fruit snacks:

We made dinosaur hand print art, which I am going to enjoy displaying in "The Gallery":

We watched The Great Dinosaur Rescue, which is, of course, more fun at our house than most, since it is about the Maiasura (pronounced Miah-saura).  It was pretty cute when Miah exclaimed, "They need me!"

And... ya know... we might have had a Dinosaur Dance Party, too...

I am really looking forward to the grand finale tomorrow morning...  Stay tuned...

As a side note, I am also really looking forward to the return of my big kids tomorrow...

Dinosaur Camp, Day 3...

... and Caleb's new glasses.

First, the glasses.  I took a few pics.  Caleb is unhappy.  To tell you the truth, I think I am unhappy, too.  Looking through the lenses, myself, they don't seem to do anything to make things more clear - only larger.  This is what Caleb said, and to be honest I just laughed at first, but after taking a peek the lenses seem sort of like poor quality magnifying glasses (you know, the smudgy looking ones you get at the dollar store).  Not sure exactly what to think, but he is holding books just as close as ever and is sitting about an inch away from the computer screen to read.  Something is not right.  I think he's cute, though:

Now, dinosaur camp...

Today we did a lot of the same basic stuff, but we added Dinosaur pizza and dirt cups (Miah called them, "Snake Snacks") to the mix:

We also made fossils, which was a ton of fun:

Movie of the Day: The Land Before Time

Two more days to go and I am running short on ideas.  I did find some dinosaur cookie cutters in a cabinet today...  We'll see...

Dinosaur Camp, Day 1...

Seth and Grace left for church camp today.  In an attempt to help Caleb, Ian, and Miah get excited about this week without their oldest siblings, I decided we should have our own camp - specifically, "Dinosaur Camp".  And wow...  they did get excited.

We had a few little mishaps as Seth and Grace left... like Miah's tears that almost could not be stopped because she will miss Grace so much and Ian's request to move into Seth's room while he is gone.  However, Dinosuar Camp is a pretty big hit, so far, so they are coping...

On Day 1, we ate dinosaur toast for breakfast (and limes... long story...  the limes are not going to be a new family favorite).

We did dinosaur worksheets, and learned about dinosaurs on the Internet, and drew dinosaur pictures, and read (very educational... ahem...  OK, maybe not) dinosaur books:

Undoubtedly, the biggest attraction of the day was the dinosaur scavenger hunt, during which each of the kids was allowed to find two dinosaurs, and it didn't really matter in the end, because I set that rule up so that Miah would have a fighting chance, and she found her dinosaurs first, anyway.  It's a good thing we did this in the morning, because the primordial grass has now been mowed:

I felt a little sorry for the dinosaurs:

It is our sincere hope that the dinosaurs will reproduce and hide eggs for us to find tomorrow:

Oh, come on... of course there are eggs...  I made them myself:

We have watched more "Dinosaur Train" than I care to admit, and we even snuggled down to watch the Bob the Builder Dinosaur movie.  Since I am amazingly creative, we ate more dinosaur shaped carbohydrates for lunch.  No one seemed to mind.

I think we might survive a week without big siblings, after all...

General Assembly, Part 2

I feel like today started a million years ago.

Quick rundown…

Went to see Monsters University, which was really great except for the 372 previews we had to endure before it began… except maybe The Lego Movie preview…  that one has potential merit…  Phil and Ian missed about the last 90 seconds of the movie, because no one should be subjected to the vigorous potty dance that Ian was doing in his seat.  Random thought.  Why do people leave before the credits are over?  Do they not realize that they miss things?  Anyway, I think this is the second movie that our entire family has ever gone to the theater to watch, together.  It was time (and even money) well spent.

One of the best parts of GA is catching up with friends from all over the country.  It was great to run into Kate and the kids and to see how they have grown into beautiful people!  I loved chatting with Pastor Jim and Marilyn!  Undoubtedly one of the best quotes of the day came from Marilyn, who said, “I’m so glad you guys found each other, because your kids are so cute!”  And eating at The Old Spaghetti Factory (Mizithra and Spumoni, oh how I enjoy eating you every four years or so) with Nicole, Ralph, Tamar, and Jadon was just great!  As an added bonus, we got to sit in the trolley!

I think, maybe, I was the only one who found it hysterical that the boys kept spinning through the revolving door.  At any rate, I'm pretty sure I thought it was funnier than the people waiting to get into the building...

Hearing Dr. Porter speak is always a highlight of Naz. events for me, and it sure didn’t hurt to close out the service with some Rend Collective Experiment!

Bedtime…  It’s definitely bedtime…
