Happy 8th Birthday, Ian...

Ian traditionally has amazing birthdays, and today was no exception, although it was a little understated.  He chose Little Caesar's pizza for his dinner and got his own Italian Cheese Bread, which was a really big deal!

Of course, there was orange cake and Blue Moon ice cream.  I mean, what else could he possibly want?

 Oh...  presents...

And it was a beautiful December day for pictures, which is always a blessing.  Those outdoor b-day pics. are hit and miss.

I love you, Ian!  You are so amazing and creative and fun!  Happy Birthday!

Love,

Mama

Family Picture Time...

Here they are, this year's edition of family portraits that happen after most of the leaves have fallen.  At this point, I've decided that we will never, ever get a nice, full colored, fall picture.  Whatever.  At least I love the people in these shots!

Happy 14th Birthday, Seth!!!

Funny how birthdays are an annual thing!  You just can't slow the passage of time!

Today Seth celebrated #14, and it was actually a relatively relaxed kind of day.  He chose Pizza Hut for his birthday dinner, sprite cake, and cookie dough ice cream.  I'm pretty sure he was excited about all of his gifts, since he kept saying, "This is good.  I'm getting stuff that was on my list!"  I'm also pretty sure he was not thrilled about being stuck in a tree for some of his birthday pics:

Happy Birthday, Seth!  I love you!

Happy 4th Birthday, Miah!

It's hard to wrap my mind around the fact that we have now celebrated half of all of the birthdays we will have with our children before they all reach adulthood.  I'm not sure exactly what that means, but it feels significant!

Our "baby princess" isn't much of a baby anymore at age 4, but I guess she will always be the baby, to us.

We got some amazing birthday pictures, today:

Miah wanted to go to Chuck-E-Cheese, and we didn't want to deprive her or anything, since our bigger kids have always been allowed to choose this on their birthdays, but we did decide to just pkay there and eat later:

Miah chose a very eclectic mix of birthday foods:

And her cake turned out pretty good, if I do say so myself:

She made out like a bandit at present time...  It pays to have older siblings who think you are the queen of the world:

I love this little girl with my whole heart!  Happy birthday, Miah!  Mama loves you much... much... much...  and "that's a lot of muches!"

Confessions of a Photographer Mom…

My kids don’t mind snapshots all that much, but when I pull out the matching clothes, they cringe…

I have no idea, whatsoever, why it always seems easier to get the perfect shot of someone else’s family, but it does.

Now, don’t get me wrong.  I love snapshots.  If you’ve ever visited my home, you understand that.  I call the living room, “my gallery”.  The walls are covered in snapshots of life.  But I like a good, posed portrait, too, and as I was perusing the living room walls, this morning, it occurred to me that the last portrait of all of my children, together, that I loved enough to order a 16 x 20 and hang above the fireplace, was from almost three years ago.  Miah is about six months old.  Grace looks like a “baby”.  All of the boys have changed.  We needed a new picture.

And so the preparations began, and by the time everyone was dressed in those aforementioned matching clothes, to much chatter about how cool that is (from Caleb) and how not so cool that is (from Grace), we were off…

I feel as if I have all but exhausted the good portrait taking spots in this town.  We tried some different places today, with mixed results.  I’m still not sure I have a portrait I really, really love, but I do think I have something with which to update the mantle appropriately.

Let me share some things.

#1  I am looking through the lens.  If the sun is in the kids’ eyes, I don’t always notice…  until I start shooting…  Then I can’t help but notice:

#2  I have come to terms with the fact that even if the sun is not in the kids’ eyes, Caleb will squint or look away…  in pretty much every shot.  He’s just cool like that:

#3  If, by some miracle, Caleb manages to open his eyes; some disaster will befall one of my other children.  Today, in that split second of opportunity, Grace sneezed:

#4  I am pretty sure at this juncture in our portrait taking relationship, Seth and Ian are afraid of me.  The two of them almost always manage to pull out a smile, even when the rest of their siblings are impossible:

#5  Speaking of Ian, I have been having terrible Mom guilt over the fact that his latest birthday pictures were taken outside… in the middle of a snowstorm.  There is something less than professional looking about his portrait that is currently hanging with all the rest.  I think it is the winter coat and look of sheer frostbite on his frozen smiling face.  I decided to do a few retakes, today.  They will never pass for December 26th photos, but I’m OK with that:

#6  By the time we near the end of a photo shoot, you can almost count on me forgetting about the sun again:

This is my favorite from today:

When we got home, Grace changed her clothes, immediately, and Miah stripped down in the living room.  Don’t count on matching outfits for them next time around.  The boys will all probably need to be reminded of the value of changing your clothes more than once a week.  I guess I can continue to buy them matching stuff…

'Catch ya on the first day of school… maybe…

Miah Turns Two...

... and the hands on the clock just keep on spinning. It never ceases to amaze me how time doesn't slow down, even for a moment.

My typical birthday posts consist of fun stuff, like what the birthday child chose for dinner (we had Stouffers Mac and Cheese, because there is nothing that Miah loves to eat more... and hot dogs on the grill)... and presents (even though we realized at the last second that one of Miah's gifts had not arrived, we had a great assortment of things for her to open, and she loved every minute of it. Miah has been sort of "anti -gift opening" up until now, so this was a fun change of pace)... and pictures (of which I have many to share). Miah's cake was Minnie Mouse and she wanted "caw-kit" (chocolate) ice cream. Overall, I'd say it was an excellent birthday celebration for a toddler...

I can't help thinking back to the way Miah came into the world when we reach another birthday. She was the saddest looking baby I have ever seen... face completely covered in bruises... no picture of a first scream, because it took so long to come... gray, slimy, little thing... I won't re-hash the whole birth story, but I did go back and look at those first few pictures, and it is amazing how she looks like a completely different kid now. Traumatic is probably the best way to describe Miah's birth...

But I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat to have my precious baby girl...

Perhaps this is why when, a couple of months ago, someone mentioned to me that they thought our having Miah was bad timing; I could hardly drive home and threw up in my backyard. I am not kidding. This happened. I haven't written about it before now, because I think I was still processing it. Maybe it took looking at those newborn pictures to put it all in perspective. But let me assure you (and by "you", I mean everyone in the whole world)... there is nothing... absolutely nothing... "bad" about having Miah... nothing... at... all.

Oh... I love my Miah.

Now... Miah keeps me on my toes. She climbs bookshelves... throws instruments at music class... and pulls her older siblings' hair. But she also swings outside for hours... colors dozens of pictures... and prays and sings with me when I put her to bed... so we let the other stuff go...

I cannot imagine our life and family without our "baby princess" who quickly learned that she has everyone wrapped around both her hands and her feet, too, and that she is really "the queen"! God's timing for new life is always perfect. He knew what He was doing when He sent us Miah... even though He broke the mold...

So I mentioned singing... One of Miah's favorite songs, which I have adapted a little bit, is "Beautiful Girl" by Andrew Peterson. At night, we sing the chorus like this, "Hey beautiful girl, Mommy loves you, I love you, Most beautiful girl in the whole wide world". It's been so long since I've listened to the rest of it that I almost forgot there were verses, too... but sure enough I found the lyrics, and here they are (By the way, this song can be found on the recording, "Slugs and Bugs and Lullabies," which is one of the best children's albums ever... in my opinion...)

"Beautiful Girl"

By: Andrew Peterson

I've got you swaddled and I've got your bottle
And you're too loud to ignore
Your mama is sleeping
The angels are keeping
So cry no more

Hey beautiful girl
Daddy loves you, he loves you
Most beautiful girl in the whole wide world

The stars are all shining, the birds are reclining
The squirrels are all nestled down
The trees in the forest are joining the chorus
And swaying to the sound

Hey beautiful girl
Daddy loves you, he loves you
Most beautiful girl in the whole wide world

I know that moons rise, and time flies
And sweet little girls get older.
But when your tooth aches or your heart breaks
Will you still cry on my shoulder?

Hey beautiful girl
Daddy loves you, he loves you
Most beautiful girl in the whole wide world

And here are some pictures of the most beautiful girl in the whole wide world:

Happy Birthday Miah!

Love,

Mommy

Happy 6th Birthday, Caleb!!!

It's always a shock... how fast it goes... and now my Caleb is six!

To be honest, today was a rushed and hectic birthday. When I woke up this morning there was still a cake to be baked (Caleb chose "twist" cake & ice cream)... a card to be signed... presents to wrap... and even one still to buy...

We took pictures... and did the Chuck-E-Cheese thing... and stopped by the store (where I bought the frosting for the cake, among other things)...

Presents didn't even begin to happen until after 8pm...

And, you know, Caleb didn't even mind...

I am so thankful for that child...

Happy Birthday, Caleb! I love you...
