Let's Reiterate...

... old friends are the best!

It was so good to see Katie and to meet Jeff, tonight!

Added to the fact that the waiter at Big Boy really took a request for lots of hot fudge seriously (OK... almost too seriously), it was just a great time!  I wonder how many slices of Oreo ice cream mud pie Katie and I have devoured together over the years...  Let's not count...

Happy 3rd Birthday, Miah!!!

I can't believe my baby princess is three!  That's preschool age, right?  No more babies or toddlers around here...

Miah is always sick on her birthday.  On her first birthday, she had pink eye.  I can't remember what the deal was when she turned two, but having looked at the pictures I can tell she wasn't feeling well.  This year she spent the entire night before her birthday throwing up, and it went on... and on... and on...  even into present time... even into cake and ice cream time...  It's just one of those things...

Miah did choose "mac-er-cheese" and "pink" ice cream for her birthday dinner.  We added some Gus' breadsticks (since we were visiting Grandma and Grandpa, so that was a possibility) as well as Grandma's lasagna, chocolate covered strawberries, and cake, of course.

I love this girl!  Here come the pics...

How To Make An Artistic Rendering With Visual Cues...

Oh... Cake...

It's another one of those moments when I sure am glad I didn't post the picture of how I'd hoped this would turn out...

However, this is not (by far) the worst cake I've ever made, and I guess I have to cut myself some slack for my first time ever working with fondant.

A note about marshmallow fondant...  It tastes like marshmallow peeps.  This is appropriate for the time of year, I guess, but Phil really hates peeps.  I don't think he's going to eat this cake...

The cake is presently sitting in the refrigerator, awaiting a 3 1/2 hour drive tomorrow.  Just in case it doesn't make it all the way to Grandma's house, there is a back up plan.  Grandma ordered a bakery cake, and I took the pictures I need to prove that I am a somewhat crazy, but awesome, cake baking mom... or at least I try...

After almost 16 years of marriage and now 40 kid's birthdays,
I still haven't figured out how to bake (or cook) without making a huge mess.
The kitchen and I went three rounds (this was round one)
before I gave up and Phil helped me clean:

That's a lot of fondant (more than I needed):

And that's a lot of shortcake
Again... more than I needed...
I sense a theme developing here:

The cool whip and strawberries inside, just like I planned it:

And the raspberries and Rice Krispies...
Well, not so much in the plan.
This was the point at which I just started throwing in whatever I could find
Perhaps we could call it Birthday Cake Casserole?
Uh... no:

The finished product...
Not exactly what I was trying to do, but...

When somebody got a sneak peek...

She loved it!

It Is Very Early...

... on Sunday morning.

I think what that means is I have survived last week.

I am tired.

I tend to be an 11th hour kind of person, and what I mean by that is that I usually melt down about the 11th hour.  It was tempting, but I made it until midnight... at least for now.

Pray for me.  More late nights to come...

Waving Good-Bye...

It's funny, but this school year has been so full of "firsts" for our kids that I almost... almost forgot about this "last".

Yeah, I was a little choked up at the Upward Awards Celebration, today.

Grace has had such a good time these past three seasons, and I would be completely remiss to not throw out a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has been involved in her Upward life... but especially to Coach Lindsay, who has done nothing but love on my spirited, crazy, wonderful daughter for every season!  It's been fun...

I Feel Great...

... after writing words that I'm not going to post, because I still have some social filters left.

Here's the part of my day I still feel inclined to share...

I feel like this day started a hundred years ago.  I’m tired.  And yet I wished for a few moments of quiet in the middle of the night to get these thoughts out, and here I sit…

Let’s start with Ian’s last Upward game for the season.  Even though his teammates gave him the ball over… and over… and over again, the kid just doesn’t shoot.  He likes to pass.  He is the king of assists.  One of the referees even lifted him up to make a basket, today, and Ian laughed hysterically and dropped the ball!  I love that kid.  He did earn an offense star for his t-shirt, today, as well as a star for Christlikeness.  Rolling his eyes, Ian said, “Another Christlikeness star?”  This led to a conversation, amidst contained laughter, about how he should want to be Christ-like all the time!  Unless Ian makes a 180 between today and next season, I don’t think he’ll play basketball again.  He really did enjoy his coaches and the other kids, and they were great, but Ian doesn’t love basketball.  What Ian loves is drinking Gatorade on Saturdays…

He did get a shot off at the end.
You can see from the angle here that it didn't go,
but it's all good.

Seth and Grace had a big day at their first District Celebrate Life!  Seth entered a drawing and received an excellent rating, so it will go on to Regionals.  Grace did a piano solo, which received a superior rating and a vocal solo, which received an excellent, so both of these events advance, as well!  In addition, they were recognized for their fourth place finish as a zone quiz team and for their individual places from two weeks ago.  As it turns out, one of the district A team members has decided to play volleyball at RCL, so Seth gets to move up, and both he and Grace will quiz on the A team at regionals!
 Here’s the haul from today:
And oh…  Caleb who had a rough basketball season seems to be the only family member talented enough to catch flying t-shirts…

I think he’s going to have to grow into this one:

For The Past Week...

... I have subjected my children to all kinds of fruits and vegetables!

It's been a good change, but I had "mercy" on them, this afternoon, and told them I was going to the store to pick up fruits and veggies for the next week and they could pick anything they wanted for lunch!

This is what their "feast" consisted of...

Let's start with my "Health Nuts"

Miah requested "pink" yogurt...
The kid will eat anything pink...
Which is sort of scary:

Caleb wanted cottage cheese...
Easy enough, although I am surprised he didn't ask for green beans...
His favorite food, no kidding:

Ian initially also asked for yogurt...
But, orange yogurt...
He followed this up with a request for spicy chicken...
And yes he's in his pajamas...
Try not to notice:

Of course, what would life be without a "difficult" request...
"Mom, can I have that special bread?  The kind with the cheese?"
Sure Grace, because you're Grace:

But Seth, oh my Seth, topped them all...
"Mom?  Anything?  You mean I can have donuts for lunch?"
Well... of course...
But you have to have something healthy too... like pizza...
I'd say this was a mom fail,
But I am currently the coolest Mom ever:

A Day At The Ironing Board...

... not really to iron, of course!

After searching for a birthday shirt for Miah, this year, I decided that I simply wasn't going to find anything I really loved, so I appliqued this myself!  I did order a tutu, because after last year's attempt at that I have decided I'm simply not talented in that way...

 Miah Loves the Shirt!
She calls it her Strawberry Berryfest Princess Shirt:

Caleb, recognizing a unique opportunity (oh my goodness, Mom's got the iron out for the second time in a calendar year), brought me his Upward shirt, so it is now all decked out with stars.  Ian cannot find his shirt.  In fact, no one in this house can find his shirt, even though I distinctly remember folding it and asking him to put it away...

Caleb's Stars:

At any rate, the iron is still out, and I might even take care of a shirt or two for Phil...

Hitting The Wall...

Ah… life…

Yesterday Grace and I headed out for Junior Festival, where she proceeded to participate in eight events (the ninth being composition, which she didn’t have to do anything specific for, last night) and I proceeded to fill the role of “Room Chairperson”.  I must have done alright, because no one told me I was the worst room chairperson in the history of Junior Festival or anything.  I actually kind of enjoyed it.  Grace, however, had some rough spots.

In a lot of ways, I think it was a good life lesson…  That lesson that everyone has to learn at some point that goes something like this:  “You can’t always be the best at everything you do”.  This lesson comes particularly hard to perfectionists.  I am one, I know.  Grace is one, she’s learning…

At any rate, there were some tears, and then Grace picked herself back up, finished the rest of her events, and went on.  Another good life lesson learned:  “You have to go on”.

I may have mentioned before… ahem… that this family took on far more than we really should have this spring.  About halfway through our drive home, last night, I sighed and said, “I am so tired”.  Grace looked over at me and said, “Mom, I think that’s the fifth time you’ve said that”.  And you know what?  I really, really didn’t know I’d been uttering those words for fifteen minutes.  We laughed and made a joke out of it, and every few minutes for the rest of the ride home I proceeded to say something like, “Hey Grace!  You know what?  I am so tired!”  Right before we turned into the driveway, Grace said, “Mom… (and I waited for it)…  I’m tired!”  And she is.  And I am.  And that’s just life right now…

We got inside, changed the sheets on Seth and Grace’s beds to prepare for company, welcomed our guests, talked for awhile, and then had quiz practice…  all before 11:15pm.  Then Grace crawled into Miah’s bed (Miah was sleeping in the toddler bed, but I hear she woke up in the middle of the night and snuggled down with Grace), and set her alarm for 4:00am in order to be up in time for the quiz today.

I woke briefly when they were leaving and then crawled back under the covers until 7:20 at which point the face of a mischievous little six year old… ahem…  Ian… was all up in my face, ready to take on the day.  And it’s a good thing, too, because not only did we need to get up and dressed for Upward basketball, we also had forgotten it was our day for snacks, so we had to make a Kroger run!

Apparently sensing my hurry, Miah dressed herself…  shirt inside out.. pants backwards!  She was so proud!  Caleb got himself ready, also.  Ian never senses my rush or listens to my words about how quickly we need to get ready.  The kid wakes us all up and then waits for someone to do everything for him!  So, as I was combing his hair while Caleb simultaneously put Ian’s shoes on him; I was nearing the end of my patience, already…  before 9:00 in the morning…  I draw the line at brushing his teeth!  We waited… and waited… and waited for him to emerge from the bathroom.  Then we finally piled into the Nazarene Limousine to make our snack run.

Miah...  all dressed, by herself...
I forgot to mention she is also wearing a pair of Grace's socks...
We decided they made good knee highs and left those on...
She looks ready to cheer, too, doesn't she?

I started to back out of the driveway and there was suddenly this crashing, banging sound.  Of course, I pulled forward again, quickly, saying (loudly), “What was that?”  Caleb, ever practical, actually bothered to look through the back window and informed me that it was just some bricks.  No way.  Just absolutely no way.  In 5 ½ years, friends… and family… and strangers have hit the wall, but I never… ever hit the wall… ever…  I got out of the van, and sure enough that’s exactly what I had done.  I can't believe I didn't get stuck.

Oh, the metaphorical reality…

Well, you can always count on my kids for comic relief.  When I got back into the van, Miah exclaimed, “Mommy!  That was fun!” and Caleb went on, unfazed, as if nothing had happened asking, “Mom, did you know you can think of the world sort of like a pizza?”  Really?  Does no one else realize I’ve hit the wall?  Wow…

The rest of our morning was rather uneventful… except for that moment when I seriously couldn’t stand it that Ian was falling down on the basketball court every three seconds, so I screamed at him to, “Get up and stay up!”  Yeah…  I totally became that awful sideline Mom today…

We decided to come home as opposed to heading out to see whatever was left of the quiz in “Quizapolis” as Miah calls it, and at present I am finishing up a delicious bowl of tomato soup and listening to the sound of, “Bolt,” playing in the living room.  It’s an excellent afternoon for a movie.

I really wish I could hibernate for a couple of weeks.  That is highly unlikely, but I think we’re all going to take Monday off… of everything…

Then we’re on to the final Upward game of the season, District Celebrate Life for talent, the Upward awards celebration, Miah’s 3rd b-day, my last class for the year, and Easter weekend… after which point we will turn the calendar to April… oh, beautiful April… with nothing special on the schedule…

Snow Day...

Well, sort of.  We actually didn't have a snow day like the surrounding public schools, but we did call it quits a little early so we could enjoy the snow.

It was surprisingly nice outside, even though we have tons of beautiful snow, so it made for a really good mix... and hey... it's finally packing snow!

The kids have wanted to make a snowman "family" for years, and they finally got to do it today!  If your family is smaller than ours, you could probably accomplish this with less of a blizzard!

Happy Snow Day:

Miah loved her snowman so much
she just had to give it a hug:

March Forth (Or Fourth)...

... Depending on how you look at it.

Today was as good a day as any to resume healthy eating habits, and so I did.  Actually, this is what I made for lunch, and I'm not sure I've ever eaten anything this healthy in my entire life:

Roasted Carrots, Zucchini, and Rutabaga:

My short term goal is to keep it up through Miah's b-day...  After that, I'll re-evaluate...

1 day down, 24 more to go...

That's A Wrap...

The kids' first district quiz season is in the books!  Like most of life, it sure went by fast.

Good news is that both Seth and Grace will be advancing to the regional quiz at Celebrate Life in May!  Grace finished in 2nd place and Seth finished in 6th, and I could not be more proud of them if I tried!  The amount of work they put in this season was nothing short of incredible for a couple of rookie quizzers!  I may have mentioned this before, but Phil and I really went into this season with no expectations.  We just wanted them to get their feet wet and to discover a love for Bible quizzing.  I can remember when we first had Seth and people would ask us if we were going to "make" him quiz when he was older.  Our response was that we hoped he would "want" to quiz.  And he sure does.  Over a decade ago, I was quizmastering and simultaneously nursing Grace.  Talk about awkward, but you do what you have to do...  I think it must have just been built into her make-up to quiz.

From day 1, the kids shattered the no expectation concept and put expectations on themselves.  We have done everything we can, as parents, to work within the structure of their personalities, abilities, and maturity level to help them reach their goals, and we've done well, but the accolades are not ours.

Grace's prayers before rounds yesterday really touched me.  "Lord help us to do this for you.  Help us to do this so that we will grow closer to you.  Help us to do this so that we will be in your word more.  Help us not to care about the points."

Please don't misunderstand.  There is a part of us that "cares about the points".  We are competitive people by nature.  We like to win.  Everybody knows that.  But I love that Grace and Seth have made that secondary to their spiritual formation.  Again... they do quiz to win.  But they also quiz, more importantly, to become the people God has created them to be.  That's a win-win any way you look at it!

How about some pics...

Getting Ready to Leave for the Day:

Just finished my last round...
Where I misread three questions...
In the midst of a sneezing attack!
I finally found the source of my problem...
New carpet...
I am severely allergic to carpet glue...
And yes... that's coffee...

This might be in my top 10 favorite pictures... ever:
