See Ya Real Soon...

Our typical Florida vacations usually end in the mid afternoon, often at Downtown Disney/Disney Springs, sometimes after a short trip to finish things up at a park or parks.  Today was not typical...

Since Disney Quest is closing... forever... we really wanted to get back there, because the only time we had ever visited was in 2008, and Disney Quest is not stroller/baby friendly at all, so it was difficult, to say the least.

We started out the day with lunch at T-Rex and then our Disney Springs shopping, which was very fun/productive.

My best buy of the trip was a Lego photo frame
featuring this sea serpent... $0.98

I am eventually going to make a complete post about what I thought of all of the dining options, how the dining plan worked for us this time around, etc.  However, I will give a little preview here and say that we had a ridiculous number of snack credits left as well as some counter service credits that we simply could not use up.  Had we not had to alter several of our days due to illness, we would have used all of our credits, but because things got a little crazy, we ended up with 47 snack credits to spare.

This is just a sampling of what we brought home:

Disney Quest, itself, ended up being something of a disappointment, and I can see that it really is time for it to close.  It is essentially the technological dream of the 90s.  And I am simply too old for simulators.  When the magic carpets make you sick, it's time to throw in the towel.  I'm really glad we went, though, because I think it's the kind of thing where if we hadn't gone we would always be wishing we had, wondering what we missed, etc.

We left Disney Springs at 9:15pm, which is far too late any way you look at it.  We only made it as far as Valdosta, and that was really pushing it, because I could not keep my eyes open, so Phil had to drive without any intelligible conversation, and it's safe to say that we are both too tired for that at this point.  Tomorrow will be a very long travel day.

Some Thoughts on This Day...

#1  You should take your children to doctor's appointments on the dates you have scheduled.  However, if you accidentally show up with one of them on the wrong day (a week ahead of time), you doctor might go ahead and see him, anyway.  If your doctor is awesome.  I might know this from experience.

#2  Nicknames can go too far.  When asked, at the doctor's office, what her last name is, Miah promptly responded, "Papaya"...

#3  My family should stop letting me walk into stores that are having school supply sales.  My name is Lisa, and I'm a school supply sale-a-holic...

Unashamed...

... I am a Black Friday shopper.

As a previous small town, small business owner, I completely understand the desire to shop locally and support my neighbors.  As a very materialistic person who has been intentionally working my way toward a more minimalistic lifestyle, for years, I completely understand the importance of emphasizing the real meaning of Christmas... ya know, the birth of our Savior... over the number of packages crammed under the tree.  But here's the truth.  I like buying things for people, I believe in being a good steward of my resources, and I don't have an exorbitant amount of cash.  So, for years, I have shopped on Black Friday.

What I was never going to do was shopping on Thanksgiving.  And yet, when dinner had been consumed, and the game had finished up, and the kids were happily laying around Grandma and Grandpa's living room in pie induced semi-comatose bliss, it occurred to me that Phil and I could, indeed, slip away for a couple of hours, alone, and snag some deals.  And so we did.

It should be abundantly clear
that I love this more than Phil does,
but he's such a trooper, and we do have fun together:

So we walked into Wal-Mart for three items.  21 minutes after the clock struck 6:00, I was sitting in the van, in the parking lot, with two of them.  Phil had a little bit more trouble getting to the check-out lanes, so it took him about 40 minutes total.  It was the easiest holiday shopping trip ever as far as I'm concerned, and I even got to direct some brand new Black Friday shoppers and help them to get the items they were after.  Yeah, that might have been the control freak in me coming out, but it is kind of fun when you're walking to the end of the check out line and people are thanking you as you go past...

L.

PS  We also did a lot of on-line shopping, so our list had dwindled, considerably, before we ever left the house.  I would imagine it would have been a bit more hectic if we were vying for electronics, which we have done in the past...

Finish Strong…

… And Go Home!

After getting ready for the day, packing and reloading our things, and having some breakfast (Phil and I weren’t too impressed with breakfast, but Caleb ate 5 waffles, and I think Seth ate more than that); we drove to Hollywood Studios and reached the parking lot right at opening.

Bag checks… tickets at the turnstiles… handed them off to Phil… and he took off running! I really wish I’d thought to pull the video camera out at this point, because the kids were just in awe. Among our soundtrack was, “Wow!” and, “Dad took off like lightning!” and, “I didn’t know Dad could run that fast!” Please insert the Rocky theme music here…

Just minutes after park opening, we held 6 Toy Story Mania fastpasses for 12:15-1:15pm in our hands.

We took in the Little Mermaid show as well as Disney Junior. Miah is pretty excited at this point every time she sees, “The Mouse” (as she has dubbed both Mickey and Minnie). “Ducky” (both Donald and Daisy) are a close second.

What to do… what to do…

Back to Epcot in an attempt to ride Soarin’!

The park sign said that Soarin’ had a 55 minute wait, so I dragged my four biggest kids through The Land while Phil took off with Miah in an attempt to finish my penny quest. When we arrived at the Soarin’ entrance, the sign said 75 minutes instead of 55, and there were still fastpasses available for 2:55pm-3:55pm. Unfortunately, I did not have my phone on me, and Phil and Miah were already long gone with the tickets, so with no way to communicate with them, we got in line.

It was definitely 75 minutes, and it was definitely worth it. I didn’t expect Ian to love it, but he was in awe. Just moments into the flight, he turned and looked at me with huge eyes and said, “Is this real?” He wanted to ride it again, but we really didn’t have another 75 minutes…

Phil and Miah had a nice stroll around the showcase and presented me with pressed pennies from Japan and China. The machine in France is still broken… quest over.

With precious little time, we ran back to the parking lot… got in the van… drove across the street (in a sort of roundabout way) to Hollywood Studios (who would have imagined we would enter that park 4 separate times on this trip)… ignored the parking attendants and grabbed a better parking spot… ran to the entrance… went through bag checks and ticketing again… booked it to the ride… and presented our fastpasses for Toy Story Mania! This was especially exciting for Phil and Ian who did not get to ride in ’08, because Ian was sleeping! Toy Story Mania is a great ride, and for the first time in my life, I had the high score (amongst my family) on an interactive game ride, so it’s all good…

We stopped at Pizza Planet for lunch and sat in our “regular” spot with our favorite aliens…

And then it was time to say good-bye to the parks…

I had Phil drop me off at Downtown Disney to spend the remaining Disney Dream Reward Dollars we had accumulated, and he went to the Hess station with the kids to fuel the van and get ready for our return trip…

And I have been blogging ever since to make up for the crazy schedule we’ve kept on this trip!

Final thoughts to come…

Add A Day Or Two…

This was supposed to be our last full day in Florida. The truth is, we have park tickets left, and hotel prices drop dramatically after the first of the year. We’re staying a couple more days. We are, however, switching hotels when our time here expires tomorrow morning. For future reference, I would not stay at Nickelodeon Suites again, and I would not recommend it. There have been quite a few issues including the lack of hot water, beds that aren’t made, additional resort fees that caught us by surprise, and “amenities” that are not free… But enough of that…

Today we spent the bulk of the day cleaning up, repacking, and reloading the van. Fun, I know…

We decided to have dinner at Cicis Pizza Buffet, because I guess I don’t have the power to veto pizza buffets, contrary to my earlier assumption…

Some shopping at Downtown Disney rounded out our evening. Another Lego store… World of Disney… and Once Upon a Toy are our favorites. Ian emerged with a “Bruce” from finding Nemo, Miah has a “Minnie Mouse” now, Seth used most of the remainder of his gift card for candy, Caleb got a super deal on Lego robber mini-figures, and Grace added to our growing Puffle collection. Phil and I picked up a few things, as well.

If you ever wondered what kind of idiots allow their children to run through the fountains when most families are wearing winter coats and hats, well… our hands are up… pick us… We did not, however, anticipate, the vigor with which Caleb would completely soak himself from head to toe (that was really not in the plan). He has been sick for most of the trip, taking asthma meds twice a day. “Go ahead and run through the fountains,” did not mean, “take a shower”… I hope we’re not paying for this one for weeks to come. I ran the kids into a store while Phil ran to get the van heated up and back to us.

It hasn’t been an exciting day, really, but it has been about as “restful” as this trip gets… On to more fun tomorrow…

Good-bye Summer, Part 1…

You were far too short this time around… but a lot of people seem to share that sentiment this year…

Our family ordinarily enjoys summer vacation from Memorial Day until Labor Day, but for a variety of reasons we chose to enroll our kids in a virtual public school this year, so we had to kiss summer good-bye on Monday. I currently have mixed feelings about that. If we can finish all of our curriculum by early May and also net several additional weeks of vacation time during the school year, I think I will be OK with the turnaround for next summer… but it doesn’t seem right to start on August 8th. In fact, this is the first time in years that I do not have a single picture of the first day of school. My mind simply couldn’t process it…

But this post is not about school. This post is about summer and specifically about the last three weeks of our summer vacation (there will be more than 1 part)…

I began blogging these weeks… well… as they happened, but I never had another chance to sit down to upload photos or to take a breath between then and now. Realistically, I should be working on school assignments or going to bed at this hour, but I am blog starved. The summer’s going up tonight!

When last I left you, we were in the midst of driving to Fort Wayne for Seth to attend a video game creation day camp. Five days later… 15 hours of driving later… more gasoline than I care to count later… We had managed to collect a great number of fun memories.

Just a rundown…

Monday I already blogged… see below…

Tuesday: Caleb, Ian Miah, and I stuck around at Science Central and enjoyed some of the exhibits that we do not always have time for during homeschool trips. Caleb also traded a rock at the swap shop for some shells which is always a favorite activity. When Seth was done with camp we all headed to the mall. We intended to eat first, but Miah had fallen asleep, so we took this opportunity to play glow golf. At half price we paid $12.00 total for 54 holes of golf (3 games) each! Ian gave up after about 20 I think and quickly proceeded to return his golf club and lose his glow in the dark golf ball… Miah woke up about halfway through and was not real happy about sitting in the stroller until we finished. Seth, Caleb, and I had a very nice time, however, and it was so nice that I actually haven’t even tallied the score yet (now 3 weeks later)… I am pretty sure I won… You really cannot do justice to glow golf with pictures... After this we went to Chick-Fil-A for free kids meals, and since you have to buy one adult meal for each free meal; I got Seth a chicken sandwich (which is what he always really wants at Chick-Fil-A but almost never gets). This was a huge hit until we discovered that they accidentally gave him a spicy chicken sandwich and his mouth caught on fire… We then proceeded to ride the carousel (which I always say no to), because it was also half price… This was Miah’s first carousel ride. She liked it until it started moving…

Wednesday: Phil came with us, and after we dropped Seth off we did some shopping and then took our three littlest people to see Winnie-the-Pooh. This was an enormous hit with Ian. We always stay for the credits (which in this case were almost as long as the movie). All the other people who left during the credits did miss some extra footage, just in case you’re wondering! We picked up Seth and the best Marcos pizza I have ever had and then headed home after another great day!

Thursday: Caleb, Ian, Miah and I attempted some fall clothes shopping. Although we did end up with several free items from Old Navy, we decided that the bulk of the shopping would have to wait until we arrived in Michigan at the outlet mall… which, of course, was a real disappointment to me… I mean, I don’t love outlet mall shopping or anything (feel the sarcasm)… We also went back to the mall, ate breadsticks at the food court, and experienced Cold Stone Creamery for the first time (and quite possibly the last, because it sort of made me sick, but I’m not sure if I can blame that on the ice cream or the heat). Chick-Fil-A won out again for dinner (3rd time this week)…

Friday: When we arrived at Science Central, Seth’s eye was all red and bubbly from an allergic reaction to something. We grabbed some ice and then took a little side trip to Wal-Mart for some fake Benadryl and eye drops. Then we took Seth back to camp and proceeded to enjoy ourselves at Science Central, because we didn’t want to leave in case he needed anything else. It was another fun day and rather relaxing as it wasn’t packed. I have always been intrigued by the announcements for a star lab show but can never find the planetarium. We bought tickets ($2.00 total) and asked for directions. It turned out to be an inflatable planetarium (which I have experienced before (although not at Science Central) and should have realized, but it was new for the kids). Ha! Now I get it! It wasn't the greatest show, but it did give us something cheap and different to do, so it was a good decision. We also enjoyed a couple of demonstrations this week, and I always think its a plus when we get something educational out of our little trips! By the end of the day, though, I was so ready to return home and to see Grace (who had arrived home from camp earlier in the day). We made one more quick stop at Marcos and scarfed some pizza that was not as great as earlier in the week but still pretty good, and then headed home (watching my lead foot that apparently developed this week... thank you for those race car driver genes, Dad)…

Although it was busy and exhausting, I wouldn’t trade the week for anything. It was a fantastic break from the every day routine and I love the memories we made!

Mommy Is Fierce…

Yesterday was our annual trip to Fort Wayne for “Last Minute Madness”! We take a busload of teenagers, usually a carload of college aged students, and our van… full of (of course) my family! Yesterday we also took Ms. Brandy (and baby Ella… inside Ms. Brandy) along, since I still have one available seat in the van if Phil is driving the bus!

The first part of the trip involves shopping at the mall, and the second part of the trip involves lazer tag (at which point, I go back to the mall with anyone who isn’t old enough/big enough to play lazer tag).

First part of the day went well…

Except for the fact that I had the worst food at Chick-Fil-A that I have ever had, which was a huge disappointment, because I love Chick-Fil-A and have never had a bad experience there before. I am guessing it was the combination of a mall based store mixed with the busyness of December 23rd shoppers…

At any rate, I got a couple of great deals at Sears (a Christmas dress for Miah next year and footie PJs for Grace, because she has been begging for them and it’s hard to find them in her size!), and I enjoyed running around the mall, trying to figure out which stores to come back to once I’d left my 3 “big kids” with Phil at the lazer tag place!

This was the first year that Caleb was old enough to play lazer tag (although even Ian would be tall enough by their standards, but I cannot imagine him wearing the lazer tag gear)! Caleb was beyond excited about this adventure, and Seth and Grace were pretty stoked, too, because they look forward to this event for weeks… maybe months! We have a super amazing group of teens and college aged students, and my understanding is that they helped the kids a lot and didn’t get nasty if their teams got behind because of “little people” or anything like that… Seth actually even had one game in which he was the top scoring player! Exciting stuff!

Meanwhile… back at the mall…

Brandy (& Ella), Ian, Miah, and I had some fun at Build-A-Bear workshop, which is quickly becoming a tradition for my “less than lazer tag size” crew! Ian originally wanted to build an abominable snowman. I talked him out of that, so we ended up with a Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer that talks… and sings… and has a nose that lights up… and roller skates… and a hat and scarf… This was expensive. Miah got a Build-A-Bunny, whom we named “Snuggle”. Snuggle has a Christmas dress and hat, bows, and shiny red shoes. This also was expensive… but not as expensive. Thankfully, since I am a dork… my coupons and gift cards cut the total by 1/3 at the checkout. That’s all you really have to know about the price, because it was still outrageous!

We hit up the taffy and fudge counter (thus making me the hero of the day when we finally did hook up with the rest of the fam. again), I bought myself a Christmas present (100% organic soap… yeah… that “L” is showing up darker and darker on my forehead every day…), and then we stopped at Dairy Queen/Orange Julius, where I has a very large three berry smoothie, Ian had a very large, “small” chocolate ice cream cone, Brandy had a small Orange Julius, Ella had vanilla ice cream, and Miah had milk… After that it was a quick spin (quite literally) on the double decker carousel, and then we were off to re-claim my oldest three…

Phil had called me a little earlier to let me know that Caleb was exhausted. Later on, Caleb told me that he had fun, but lazer tag was nothing like he thought it would be. I asked him what he thought it would be like, but he wouldn’t tell me!

When I got there, I found Phil and Grace, and Grace was crying! This was surprising to me, because if I am going to find a crying child, Grace would be my last guess… every time! As it turns out, some lady accused her of swinging her lazer gun and hitting people with it… uh… this really doesn’t sound like Grace… at all. Now, don’t get me wrong. I am not one of those people who thinks her children can do no wrong. I discipline my kids when they’re out of line. Grace is an amazing kid, but she does do things, sometimes, that are not OK. If I had gotten there and found that someone had accused her of screaming at the top of her lungs when someone shot a lazer at her and then running through the room whining and insisting that she had not been hit and someone should turn her light back on because of the unfairness in the world, I would have immediately talked to her about her attitude and proper etiquette in public places. I would have known that she had done this. But intentionally swinging a gun at people and hitting them with it? No… just not Grace…

Apparently, the lady immediately exited that round of lazer tag and came to Phil, defending herself and telling him about Grace hitting people… We found that kind of weird, since no one had accused her of anything… yet…

Phil and I talked to Grace, got her calmed down, and figured this was the end of a silly little mishap… Our best guess, at this point, is that Grace really was “swinging” her gun… in a childlike, “hey lazer tag is so much fun and I’m excited” kind of way, and maybe it accidentally bumped the woman in question. Grace insists that even this did not happen, but I am pretty sure that in the dark (mind you) it could have and Grace wouldn’t have even realized it!

At any rate, I collected Caleb (and Seth, who was wearing out, too), and we went back to the van where Brandy (& Ella), Ian, and Miah were waiting. Grace had opted to play the last game of the day (which I considered playing, myself, but didn’t really want to pay the $7.00 for just one game). We ate some taffy and fudge and waited for the day to finish up…

Well… it wasn’t 10 minutes later, and Grace comes out to the van, really crying. In a state of confusion, I ask her what happened, and she tells me she hurt her toe. Really? OK… so I tell her to hop in, and we determine that the injury is not life threatening. I pass some taffy back to her, and she exclaims, “And that’s not all… one of the people who said I was hitting people with my lazer gun came up to me and started swinging her gun at me!” Now… that makes more sense as to why my lazer tag obsessed 9 year old daughter would leave the game early! She was scared!

I found Phil immediately and asked for more details about this woman who originally accused Grace. I then told him how inappropriate it is for an adult to swing a blunt object at my child (not that he didn’t already know this) and marched my way back into the building. Phil was right behind me within a second or two. It’s really no secret that I have a hot temper if you mess with my kids, and I think he wanted to make sure I didn’t totally ruin the reputation of our church at the lazer tag place… we do go there every year, you know… J

I went in and talked with the guy at the counter who is always there. I told him what was going on, and he was very, very nice. There wasn’t a whole lot he could do about it, since the last game of the day was already in progress, but he agreed with me that it wasn’t “very cool” of this woman, and I think I made it pretty clear that I was going to approach her when she exited the game.

When the game let out, Phil tried to figure out, from our own people, what had happened to Grace, and Connor told him that the lazer tag staff guy had brought Grace out of the game when she started crying. No harm there… thank you lazer tag guy for noticing that my child was distraught and helping her to get through the dark course… Definite kudos for the people who run this place…

Phil pointed out the lady to me who had talked to him earlier. She was with another woman (maybe 17-22 years old… I’m guessing a daughter) and a little boy who was probably around 8. I went up to her and said… very nicely and calmly, “Excuse me, ma’am (she looked to be in her mid-40s, so I thought ma’am was appropriate), I think you had a confrontation with my daughter.” She then got in my face and said sort of loudly and escalating, “I did not have a confrontation with your daughter. She hit me with her gun and I told her to stop!” Now… I don’t know… maybe she didn’t understand what the word confrontation meant. I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt… but that sounds like a confrontation to me. The girl next to her also got in my face and started talking about how Grace was going around swinging her gun at people and hitting them… (I did for a brief moment wonder at this point if they just didn’t understand lazer tag at all and were offended that Grace was hitting them with lazers and scoring more points than them…) I proceeded to say (still nicely, quietly, but perhaps slightly less calmly), “well… my daughter is 9 years old, and she doesn’t lie, and that’s not the story I heard.” I started to say, “She said that you accused her of hitting people with her gun and then that in this last game someone who was with you was swinging their gun at her.” At this point, the three of them started trotting for the front of the building and the door (I really think they were scared they were going to be kicked out and never allowed back in, and this is the point at which I knew I was right in believing Grace all along), and the lady starts shouting over her shoulder, “Well… I can see where she got her attitude!” I said (a little more loudly now, just so she could hear me), “That is not how you treat 9 year old little girls!” Then I said mostly to myself, and partly under my breath… “Attitude, you wanna see attitude… I’ve got attitude…”

Our amazing teenagers kinda parted the way for me, as I went after these people on the way out of the building… The scene was probably pretty funny, actually, because it had to have looked like they were running away from me… The lazer tag guy at the counter looked kind of amused…

As I got out the door, the woman was already in her car, driving away as quickly as she could. Unbelievable! Gosh, I thought to myself, “I’m glad I don’t have to work with her, because there are no conflict resolution skills there!” Plight of a business major, I guess, to have these conversations in my head…

Connor was standing on the sidewalk with a handful of our other teenagers, looking a little confused, and asked, “Was it one of our people who did this to Grace?” I laughed and said, “No… if it was one of you guys I would have just beat you!” There was a brief moment of awkward silence, and then we all burst out laughing! I am seriously a very non-violent person! In my 31 years of life, I have never been in a fist fight. I remember slapping an ex-boyfriend… once… and to this day I have no idea what he did but am relatively sure he deserved it…

However… it’s probably a good thing that I didn’t play that last round, because if I had seen a full grown adult taking a swing at my child with a lazer gun, I probably would have swung back… and ended up on the nightly news!

There are some occasions in which threatening children is appropriate…

For instance, it’s OK (if you’re the parent) to say, “If you don’t clean your room, I am going to take your DS and send it, with extra batteries, to Ethiopia, where some child will appreciate it!”

It is never OK to walk up to a child you do not know and threaten to hit them with a blunt object… just never…

Overall, I think everything turned out OK. Grace is even embarrassed, this morning, that I’m writing the story. She is decked out in her owl print footie pajamas and playing Build-A-Bear with Miah. Let me tell you, she looks like and enraged, cold blooded killer who might snap and go on a rampage, knocking people unconscious with squirt guns at any moment…

And now I have a house to clean… because there is no where for Santa to leave my coal, since I am such a ferocious, attitude filled Mommy!

On Being Five...

Today we went to "Last Minute Madness II"... a shopping and laser tag trip with our youth group...

Since Caleb and Ian are both too young and too short to play laser tag, and I'm not all that good at it anyway (but with baby, I surely would have been super slow and continually getting shot), I decided to take my little guys to the mall while everyone else played...

I thought we were having fun, but not long into our trip, Caleb said, "Mommy... being 5 is no fun at all... I'm almost too little to do anything!" I hadn't realized until that point how badly he wanted to play laser tag...

So...

$60... trip to Build-A-Bear workshop...
$8... ice cream (and a raspberry lemonade julius for Mom)...
$5... ride on the second level of the mall carousel...

Having your five year old snuggle up close to you on an bench at the mall and say, "Mommy... I don't ever want to grow up"... priceless...

I only wish I had brought my camera to photo document our trip... Then again... It probably wouldn't have been the same if Caleb had stopped to pose every few minutes...

There are a couple of things about the mall that baffle me, though, such as...

What do Amish people do with the many bags of things they purchase at stores like Hollister and Aeropostale?

And do I really want to know why the very elderly man with a walker had a HUGE Victoria's Secret bag? Actually... that was kinda cute... I really wish I'd had the camera for that moment...

Lisa

PS... Our family had lunch at Cheddars, too... and I was wearing my sweats again... Yummy... but not so fashionable... L.

It Could Only Happen To Me...

... I think!

Yesterday was an interesting day of sorts, from start to finish. I found myself alone with my "little guys" (Caleb and Ian) around 12:30, and after Caleb's music class we decided to make a trip to finish up some Christmas shopping and pick up groceries (for which we were long overdue because of our outrageous schedule as of late).

So we arrived at Wal-Mart around 3:30 and proceeded to spend the next three hours picking up the things we needed. Our cart was packed, and we were all rather tired and hungry when we stepped into line at the checkout lane...

After what seemed like an eternity (at the time), everything was scanned, and I swiped my credit card to take care of the "damage"... and the cash register beeped and spit out this little receipt that said my credit was denied... Since I was using a card that had no balance whatsoever until I purchased twenty bucks worth of gas earlier in the day, I figured this must be a mistake, and I ran it again... beep... silly little piece of paper denying my credit again... Now, this would ordinarily not be an issue, because I almost always carry several cards with me, and in the event that something is wrong with one of them, I just switch cards. I usually carry my bank card with me too, and most of the time there is enough money in my checking account to cover such a purchase. Unfortunately, the reimbursement checks that had been deposited earlier in the day hadn't yet cleared, and Phil had my other card, so neither of those two options existed...

Clearly frustrated... and embarrassed at this point... I told the cashier that I would have to call my credit card company... at which point everyone else in line kind of snickered and retreated to different checkout lanes... (I could just hear them thinking nasty things about the poor, fraudulent, pregnant lady with two little kids who couldn't afford her groceries)...

After working with two customer service representatives who couldn't speak English fluently (and let me just take a little rabbit trail here to say that I am not one of those people who hates immigrants or anything, and I don't feel like people should have to learn English to become citizens, either, but I do not understand why someone would be hired in communications if they cannot speak English), I was assured that they had thought that my card was stolen (apparently a $20.00 charge for gas was outside of my normal spending habits), and that I would need to provide my social security number, mother's maiden name, and rights to marry my firstborn child before they could unsuspend my credit card (with no balance and plenty of credit limit). I, of course, granted them this information and was assured that my card could be used immediately.

And so I hung up the phone and swiped my card, resulting in another (now irritating) little "beep" and a stupid little slip of paper, again denying my credit...

At this point, I am certain the cashier thought I was just talking into the air and making up a ridiculous story in an attempt to get out of the store with free merchandise. Of course, this is outrageous, because I am not so stupid as to think that Wal-Mart would ever let anyone out of one of their facilities without charging them an arm and a leg (which I might have offered at this point if I thought it would help)...

Tried the card again, just for kicks... "beep"...

And so now my only option was to suspend my order and try again in 5 minutes, hoping that the transaction would go through...

Pulled Ian (surrounded by Wal-Mart bags in the cart and now screaming), and Caleb (who had been taking a little ride on the spinning bagging area thing) to the back of the line and waited, only to find that 5 minutes later the freaking card still wouldn't work, and to top it off, they couldn't suspend the order a second time, so now I either had to leave the store without anything or come up with another plan. I decided it was worth holding up the line (which, of course, quickly dispersed for a second time) and called the credit card company again...

This time the customer service rep. did speak English, and I didn't let him off the phone until the order cleared... which it did... provided that I could offer some photo evidence of my identity... which you would think I could... if only I could find my driver's license... which, of course, I couldn't...

After searching through everything in my purse and wallet... twice... my license finally appeared, and I was released with my two wiggly children and my $400.00 worth of Wal-Mart crap...

As I neared the exit, I though to myself, "If the security alarm goes off, I am going to scream!" And wouldn't you know it, as I walked through the door I heard in a lovely, computerized, tone something to the effect of, "Please step back... we think you have stolen items in your cart"... (OK, so that's an exaggeration), but the alarm really did go off, and I really did have to go back inside. I did not, however, scream, as I thought I would...

Ian, who had stopped screaming, started again almost immediately...

I was asked if I had any electronics, DVDs, etc. and the answer was no. I didn't. Ya know, except for the dozen or so Wii systems I had stuffed in my shoes... (I didn't say that... wanted to, but didn't)... Usually they just let you go at this point, but oh, no... Instead this man took my receipt and started going through it, looking for what might have set off the alarm. It was at this point that a nice lady pointed out to me that our package of pull-ups was dragging underneath the cart (I had put them there after they were scanned at the checkout lane), and I thanked her and returned them to their original place. Then another customer comes up to me, gets in my face, and asks (in an accusatory, whiny sort of voice) if the pull-ups had gotten stuck under the cart before I went through the checkout. The evil Lisa wanted to take her by her throat and shake her, assuring her that it was worth my time and effort to steal a fifteen dollar package of nighttime diapers after paying for the rest of my merchandise... The nice Lisa said, "No, I put them down there after they were scanned." The she left...

Finally, the Wal-Mart greeter guy found the ten dollar Dora the Explorer watch (a birthday present) that was setting off the alarm. He deactivated it, and we were finally free to go out into the cold, dark night... (Caleb and I had not yet put on our new, really ugly coats that cost $7.00 apiece, but that is a lovely story for another time)...

As I exited the store, I thought, "Ya know... I will probably pop the trunk to put these bags in and find a dead body... It just would have topped it all off... All I found was a dozen basketballs from the church league practice...

The boys and I then made a valiant effort to eat at Texas Roadhouse, but decided that the wait was far too long for one crabby pregnant lady and two sleepy kids... We ended up at Chili's, where Ian ate virtually nothing and Caleb enjoyed pizza. I don't know why, but a couple of times a year I forget how sick I get every time I eat at Chili's and I give in to the temptation. I should have taken Caleb's suggestion and split a chicken basket with him at DQ...

We finally got home, put our things away, and went to bed...

Please, can't someone come up with a realistic way to do grocery shopping on-line...

An Assessment...

... Of Black Friday...

So, I am kind of tired of hearing people talk about how evil it is to go shopping on Black Friday. I mean... really... shame on all of us who hit the stores yesterday at 3am. Clearly, all we were thinking about was our need for more and more stuff and how the best way to pursue the American Dream is by diving in... head first... to consumerism and greed! Yeah... that's definitely what I was concerned about when the alarm went off after my luxurious THREE hours of sleep!

Ya know what I was really thinking about? A couple of things...

First, I was excited to have a whole day to spend with my family. It doesn't happen nearly as often as we might like. When my 8 year old daughter greeted me... fully awake... when I came to her door at 2am, I knew she was excited, too. When my 9 year old son (who usually takes hours to get dressed in the morning) followed us down the stairs, fully clothed and ready to go, it hit me that he was looking forward to the day. And when my sleepy 5 year old son finally opened his eyes and processed what was going on, he shouted, "Yeah! it's Black Friday". They were all, of course, thinking about the hundreds upon hundreds of dollars that they had in their little pockets to spend on themselves, right?

Also... I love giving gifts. I am well aware of the true meaning of Christmas. I'm not in it to get everything I can out of it. But come on... let's not be so pious that we forget that Christmas is about God's gift to us and that we can celebrate that gift by sharing with others. We can celebrate it in a whole lot of other ways too... and our family does... but we like to give gifts! We, however, are not made of money. Black Friday sales are most often very, very good. I have actually read different things that people have written this week about how you can get the same deals for weeks on end. Although some stores offer the same deals, most do not. Further the deals that these people are talking about usually involve the high ticket items, and we don't exactly have the cash flow to buy big screen TVs and laptops for everyone on our list. The $5.00 kind of deals... those you basically only get on Black Friday (with a couple of notable exceptions). So if you have a lot of family who you want to send gifts to, Black Friday is just economically smart.

We stood in line at Meijer for two hours (basically without complaint) to purchase Wii systems. I would like to mention that as far as our children know, we just purchased a Wii for the firehouse. They were willing to stand there (or sit in shopping carts as the case may be) for the right to purchase something for someone else. In the end, Phil got his Wii, and I picked mine up behind him (for our family), but the kids had no idea that this happened. I would say that's pretty selfless on their part. However, their extreme cuteness, and Seth's ingenuity (he found a way to sit kinda underneath the cart) did earn Seth and Caleb a photo spot on the front page of our local paper! I think the experience taught them something about the virtue of patience, the willingness to do something that doesn't benefit us directly, and the reward that is often a nice surprise at the end.

Were there nasty people out yesterday morning, pushing and shoving and taking things out of other people's hands and carts? Uh-huh... Were there irritable store team members and rude customers? Uh-huh... But come on... These people are everywhere, all the time! Mostly I observed friendly people looking to catch a break at the holidays and capable staff, taking pride in their jobs!

So are Black Friday... or it's participants... worthy of reprimand? I guess you can be the judge on that one to your heart's content. As for me... shopping till you drop isn't all that bad. Especially when everyone in the house is asleep for the night by 5:30!

Squeezin' Every Last Drop...

... Day 16, Downtown Disney (again) and Aquatica (again)!

We have done so many things on this trip! Still, there are always things you just can't get done! After much thought, we went with our original plan to visit Downtown Disney in order to secure the last souvenirs we wanted for this trip. I bought some scrapbooking supplies, Seth bought a rock he wanted and some Disney racers, Grace bought a princess pen (but don't worry, she spent money all over the place for the past two weeks, so she had plenty of souvenirs already... and she is broke!), Caleb bought a rock (like Seth's) and a stuffed Mickey Mouse, and Ian got a talking Nemo. Phil almost bought a monorail, but in a last minute moment of reason decided that he really didn't need it...

We had a pretty good list going of things we could do with this day. In the end, we decided to "cut our losses" on things like the Mike and Sully meet and greet... and Epcot's interactive venues like Innoventions and Kodak Imageworks... and the many things we didn't get to experience at DisneyQuest.

Instead, we decided that we'd really like to return to Aquatica to experience the action river, as well as the lazy river, again, and so that's exactly what we did. After a couple of hours, we pirated a few more park maps and then called it a day... and a vacation... and we began the long trek home...

Currently Watching
The Cosby Show: Season 3
By Joseph C. Phillips

If my last post was "heavy" stuff... Take a deep breath... This one is not!

I spent most of the day playing Duplos... and I am not kidding! Actually, I love playing with Caleb's Thomas Duplos and making track... after track... after track. My creations don't last long, because if you have ever watched Thomas the Tank Engine, you know that the engines often crash into bridges... water... each other... whatever, and Caleb plays very imaginatively. But we had lots of fun!

Then I did some Christmas shopping. Yeah... You heard right. Lots of great on-line sales going on this weekend. If you are an on-line shopper, get going! And if you shop at amazon, PLEASE go through my site:

www.blessedmommyof4.blogspot.com

I admit that I have not been blogging on there enough, but I earn a commission every time someone clicks through to amazon and buys something, so if you're going to shop there anyway, PLEASE (again) help me out!

Alright, gotta go. Caleb wants cheese. He is starving, you know... no matter that he is off the growth charts, he has to eat all day long or he is not happy!

More Random Thoughts...

I know... I know... But one day I will make another post with some substance to it. Just hang in there. So...

*I could live at Hobby Lobby. Seriously, I go in for one or two things, and it's something like being sucked into a black hole... It is the one store that might possibly be able to turn me into a "shopper" again...

*If only I had an overhead projector, then...
