My Baby Is Two...

... Can that be right?

Ian has grown so quickly! He continues to be the most mild mannered, enjoyable little guy we could ever have asked for... although he's wasn't too interested in taking his birthday pictures! Still... here they are:

Ian asked for cheese pizza and fries for his birthday dinner... and cookie "didi" ice cream... all of which he got! He loved his duck birthday cake... but he tried to blow the ducks out instead of the candle... hehehe... Daddy eventually had to help!

Present time was lots of fun, but Ian really enjoyed the opening process more on Christmas. The birthday presents he wanted to rip through as quickly as possible in order to play with them! And play he did... with his pile full of loot... just as soon as Mommy snapped one more pic.

I love this child! He brings so much joy to our family, and even though he is just two years old, it seems like he has been a part of us forever! Happy Birthday Ian!

I Pretty Much Hate Forwarded E-mail...

... However...

This morning I got an e-mail that had a quote from Rick Warren in it (by the way, I am not a huge Warren fanatic, although I did read "Purpose Driven Life", and I think he's a good guy). Here's what it said:

"God didn't put me on Earth just to fulfill a to-do list. He's more interested in what I am than what I do. That's why we're called human beings, not human doings."

I liked that. And to be honest, it's exactly what I needed to read this morning.

Speaking of what I'm doing... blogging at 8am... As it turns out, we stayed out kinda late last night, enjoying the Illuminate/Journey Christmas Party, which was the most relaxing party I've experienced this season! The kids were supposed to have a Christmas party this morning for music class (well, actually I guess it was Caleb's party, but everyone was invited). However, there is a sheet of ice covering... well... everything! So, of course, the party has been canceled. The kids are going to be totally bummed out about this when they wake up (they are still asleep... amazingly... due to the late night), but it's actually kind of a blessing, because now I don't have anywhere to go today, so we can just stay home and hang out!

I do have one little (uh...) problem. For the upcoming Super Seek-ret Sleepover, we are supposed to be making knot blankets. However, the fleece I ordered has still not arrived! This is not (or knot... hehehe) good! I am going to have to make a run to Wal-mart... or Hobby Lobby... or somewhere to get fleece if it doesn't get here today. That is, if the ice clears. If not, I am clearly not going anywhere!

PS I am going to try to get some pics. up from the zoo. Check back at the zoo post (a few days ago) later today! L.

Really Could've Used Nana Today...

There are many times in which I stop and remember my grandparents. Perhaps you read the tributes I wrote to each one some months ago. I miss Nana the most at Christmas cookie baking time, each year.

Me, Julie, Amy, and Nana Making Cookies:
(I'm not sure why the quality of this scan is so bad. The picture, itself, is great.)
Every year Nan made tons of dough for all of us, and then she let us create in only the way three little (uh... sometimes devious) girls can! I'm tellin' you, we made dozens and dozens of cookies!

Today I made cookies with my kids. I made two batches of cookie dough each, but I didn't let them use it all! Instead, I saved a whole bunch for the upcoming sleepover and snagged some, myself, for the Christmas party tonight. All in all, Seth, Grace, and Caleb each made around a dozen cookies... and we let Ian carry an empty bowl around...

If Nana was still alive, she'd be 92 years old. And I would have called her. And I hope she would have come to make cookies with us. And I hope she would have brought her own dough!

I don't really know for sure if people can look back on Earth once their lives here are finished. If Nana can, she is surely laughing at me today, maybe even shaking her head and remembering the fillings that were lost on the incredible "cookie bombs" over the years. I am sure she would agree that I deserve Caleb's creation shown below, and look... his little hands are still sprinkling:

Seriously, how many sprinkles can you put on one cookie? At least there are none inside:
(Actually, the picture doesn't do this justice, either. The sprinkles are like an inch thick!)
Ah... memories... The stuff life is made of...

Totally Burned Out...

... And so ends another semester.

My grades are going to show it this time around. For a long time now, I have been able to "squeak by", bringing in pretty good final grades, even in the midst of complete chaos, but that will not be the case this term...

You know... I'm really tired of not even being able to sit down and compose an e-mail without starting off by apologizing profusely for being so late to respond, because my life is so busy or ending with a rushed explanation about what I have to run to do next.

Something has to give...

I am completely and totally burned out, and the things I'm doing that keep me so busy are not the things I want to remember as the way life was in this stage...

I want to finish playing Super Mario Brothers with Seth so we can move on to Super Mario Brothers Two...

I want to schedule "girl time" with Grace again, so she'll learn how to paint her nails and use her spirograph...

I want to spend hours building outrageous duplo train layouts with Caleb before he's too big for "baby" toys...

I want to cuddle with Ian and read him book... after book... after book...

I want to go out with my husband...

I want to read my Bible...

And as I sit here with tears streaming down my face... and as I think about all the stupid things I've done in the last few weeks... and as I am distracted, wondering when the last time I fed the fish was... Well, like I said before, something has to give...

And it's not going to be what's important anymore...

We Made It To The Zoo This Time!

We had a wonderful adventure at the zoo with our friends!

Some Highlights:
*Aubrie liked "swimming" with the fish...
*It was almost more fun to watch Amber pet the sharks than the kids...
*The Christmas lights were amazingly beautiful...
*The holiday train exhibit was really fun (especially for Phil and Caleb)...
*We learned that if you pretend you didn't read the "no strollers" sign you can bring your strollers into the dolphin underwater viewing area...

Some... uh... Lowlights:
*It was cold...
*The Zoo's Christmas activities were mostly Santa Claus related (which... I mean... Santa's OK and everything... I'm just gettin' a little burned out on him...), and they all cost additional money...
*We kept waiting for the dolphin show to start... and then it was over...

We seriously had a great time, though, including the 2 + hours it took us to get there (we did a little bit of shopping along the way), and the yummy dinner we had at Chilis afterward (where Ian did an encore presentation of the "shrieking baby" show)...

A picture's worth a thousand words:

Robert, Amber, Avalyn, and Aubrie

The Six of Us... Sort of posing in front of the Christmas Tree...

A collage of some of the highlights...
Oh, did I forget to mention we tied Seth to the train tracks?

Take Two...

... Tryin' To Make It To The Zoo Again!

So... last Saturday we set off for the zoo, among other things. All that happened were the other things! We went to mall in search of some elusive Christmas gifts for Grace... which remained elusive... And, in the end, all we bought at the mall was lunch... at Chick-Fil-A...

It was so cold... and so snowy... and so late by the time we left the mall, there was really no point in driving over to the zoo for a couple of frigid hours!

So... off we go again today! Can't say there aren't a couple of stops we have to make along the way, but it's pretty much a lock this time around that the main attraction will be the zoo!

By the way... one party down, five to go. I thought the FNF party last night went rather well... better than last year, for sure!

And did I forget to mention it's finals week? I am so going to love next week, but the grass is always greener, right?

And So The Week Of The Everlasting Christmas Party Begins...

... Here I am:
Don't I look Christmassy?

Anybody want to place bets on whether the smile or the curls fall first?

'Cause I really doubt they're both going to endure 8 days... and 6 parties...

Christmas really isn't supposed to be this hectic, is it?

So Sick and Tired...

... Of Being Sick and Tired!

If it's not one thing around here, it's another. I have had a splitting headache for a couple of days and found that I was in good company last night, because pretty much everyone at Illuminate has had a splitting headache all week... It's not helping that I am exhausted, and there is so much to do in the next couple of weeks!

We are going to Christmas at the Zoo tomorrow, and hopefully we'll be able to finish our Christmas shopping. Then there's the rejoicing service on Sunday night (and Grace doesn't even know the words for her solo yet).

Next week there's a Christmas party for the kids on Wednesday, A Christmas party for Illuminate and the Journey on Thursday, A concert on Friday night, A Christmas Party/Sleepover for Seek-rets on Saturday-Sunday, and the Christmas cantata on Sunday morning (which I am not in... which is good... because I love to sing, but there's no way I could have crammed one more thing into this schedule)! Uh... followed by the Transform Christmas party on Sunday night...

And then, BOOM, it's Christmas week! And to tell you the truth, I think it's going to be a rather relaxed kind of Christmas, and I'm pleased by that, because we are going to need a few minutes to catch our breath after all of the proceeding activity!

This, of course, does not even take into account the regular aspects of life... like finishing up my school semester... and the kids' school semester... and keyboard lessons... and play dates... and throwing peanut butter and jelly sandwiches around...

And so I continue to rant about all of the things that make life way too busy, never stopping to think about how very blessed I am to do such things...

Another Post Today...

... Just Because My Kids Are So Awesome!

So... I decided today was as good a day as any to take the kids Christmas pics. The family ones will come later, as I am currently wearing a sweatshirt and hat, and there's no hope of things gettin' better!

Hey... if you read this blog and I don't have a snail mail address for you, please send one my way, as it is almost time for Christmas letters, and I do intend to send them this year (last year was a major oops in that department)!

Here's the pics:

The Urgent vs. The Important...

Time management... I've never been very good at it, and the older I get... well... I'm not getting any better...

I remember reading about the urgent vs. the important in some class of mine. I also learned quite a bit about the non-urgent... and the unimportant... and the truth is, I just can't seem to get it balanced...

Seems that I often come to a point in life that feels a little bit like "the eleventh hour" (have written about this before), and then I get really stressed, because there are a trillion and one things bearing down on me... and they're all "urgent"... and I can't get any of them done in time... so, instead, I focus my energy on something completely non-urgent, and often unimportant, to boot...

Ah...

I waste so much time!

The other day I was thinking about this as I installed a new toilet seat in our upstairs bathroom. Our old toilet seat came with the house. It was squishy (which I totally do not prefer)... and it was cheap... and it was broken! Well, I bought a new toilet seat several months ago, and it has been sitting on the bathroom floor ever since. When I finally sat down to make the replacement, I was shocked to find that it took me less than five minutes... FIVE! We have been sliding around on a broken toilet seat for months now, with a brand new one sitting at our feet, and all I had to do was carve out five minutes to fix the problem! But I was too busy... I guess... but with what? It was five stinkin' minutes! As I threw the old toilet seat away, I said to myself, "why did I wait so long to do this?" And there's something deeper here to be learned...

There are so many things in life that I just keep putting off... Granted, they are far more important than replacing broken toilet seats, and they are far more time consuming, too... But that's the point. I need to focus on what's important, because I don't want to wait longer than I should and then find myself staring at the trash and wondering why I wasted all this time...

Reevaluating is tough. We all get 24 hours every day. That's it. But somehow I have to find a way to put my 24 to better use, because I'm sick of wasting time...

My First Casserole...

... So, to tell you the truth, I never thought I'd see this day... but here's what happened...

We had this dinner, tonight, for all of the church staff. And I knew several weeks ago that I was supposed to ask Ruth what I should bring, but I kinda kept forgetting, because I am not real up with it when it comes to "pitch in" dinners...

When I finally did remember to ask, Ruth listed everything that everyone else was bringing and then told me I could bring a vegetable (this was after I offered to bring PBJ, but I was only kidding... sort of)... Now, vegetables are those things that grow in the ground or something, right? hehehe... Seriously, though... when we eat veggies at our house (which we do), they are usually in the frozen mixed veggies boiled in a pot variety or the hey go grab a carrot stick form. They don't look all that pretty, and I don't think you take that kind of thing to a "pitch in" dinner when asked to bring a vegetable dish...

So, I looked for recipes on-line... and I came up with a sweet potato casserole... yeah... It was made with orange juice, so I figured it couldn't be all bad...

My family's reaction to all of this was quite funny, but Seth's was the best. I had just pulled the sweet potato casserole out of the oven when he wandered through the kitchen and asked, "Mommy, what's that?" I told him it was the sweet potatoes, and he proceeded to cautiously ask, "Could you please not put any of that on my plate when we go to dinner, because it doesn't look like something I would like!" And then I laughed and promised not to put any on his plate (because he knows if I put something on his plate, he has to eat it... especially when we are in public)!

To tell you the truth, I thought it turned out pretty good. I'm not sure you're really supposed to add so much sugar or pumpkin pie spice to sweet potatoes, and I'm relatively positive that I went way overboard on the marshmallows, but hey... it looked pretty (and I did, indeed, take pictures, although I haven't uploaded them to my computer yet, so I won't be posting them... at least not tonite).

But I'm just not much of a casserole kind of girl... Except I guess I will be this week, because there is half a pan of the stuff left...

Did I Just Watch A Movie...

... Because I don't think that qualifies!

Alright... I really do have some actual real thoughts that I want to share sometime soon, but for now... another... uh... movie review?

Several years ago, I met some people who thought that Napoleon Dynamite was basically the greatest film to ever hit the shelves... For me... well... that's where it's going to stay... because seriously... who could I even give it away to?

Wow... Now, to be fair, it had some redeeming qualities in the some 6-8 minutes that actually played out like a movie. Really... there was a lot of potential there for a plot. Napoleon, Pedro, and Deb had an endearing friendship going on, and I think they could have worked with that to further examine life in High School. But they didn't.

Why did people enjoy this movie? I am seriously perplexed. Was it enjoyable because they were making fun of Napoleon... just like his classmates... and his family (if you can call it that... totally could have done without the creepy uncle)? Did they somehow relate to this guy, because if they did, I'd think they would have liked to have seen a plot develop. And please... somebody tell me... how could someone actually prefer this film (again, if you can call it that) to High School Musical? I mean... come on... I know I'm a dork and everything and caught up in the HSM craze, because I think the movies are really cute, but I really can't understand how anyone who thinks HSM is stupid could also find Napoleon Dynamite amusing. I'm sure there are lots of people out there who don't like either. That's normal. What I watched last night definitely delved into the abnormal.

Serious moral issues with the movie? It's hard to put into words, but I definitely would not allow my kids to see this, and I won't encourage it when they're older either. When the farmer guy shoots the cow... that's disturbing. And let's not even get into "Bust Must"... any movie with a freaky character who attempts to sell such a thing to teenage girls... well, that's disturbing, too. There wasn't anything overtly "bad" I guess, as in I wouldn't totally flip out if your teenager saw this at some point in a moment of idiocy. I think we hear gosh, heck, darn, flippin, freakin, etc. about... well... to be honest I stopped counting, but other than that there is only one slightly more crude word, and most people probably don't consider it profanity, either (think strong form of "ticked"). I just don't like it.

But really... this movie was a waste of my time... Not worth it's weight in... uh... tater tots? Except that it has confirmed beyond the shadow of a doubt that I will continue to be very happy being a dork. I do not like to wail mournfully. I like to sing...

I Now Return You To My Regularly Scheduled Life...

You know... I guess there's a first time for everything. Yesterday, Phil and I went to the movies together for the first time ever. Uh... yeah... deadpan to the audience. But really... I'm not kidding...

I could probably go into the whole story, but I think I won't.. at least just yet.

We saw "Fireproof", which was very good. Now, let me be honest... I don't think I was totally sold on this movie from the promos, previews, etc. They kind of gave me the impression that it might be a whole bunch of sappy, evangelical garbage that sort of made me want to puke. I realize I am playing with fire here (pun intended). If you consider yourself "evangelical", we can talk. I'm probably not making fun of you at all. You'd just have to understand where I'm coming from. At any rate, while there were a few scenes that explained Christianity from a slightly different perspective than I would have, it was overall NOT garbage... in fact, it was great.

If you are going to see Fireproof, and I think everybody should, and you don't want to read any spoilers, than stop reading now.

Really... I'm going to ruin the movie for you, so don't read anymore if you haven't seen this yet.

Last chance to turn back... Here come the spoilers...

I was amazingly impressed with the intensity of the fire/rescue scenes. Seriously, I was totally enthralled and a little bit panicked!

I was equally impressed with the way this movie covered the struggles that Caleb and Katherine had with unfaithfulness and how real and how hard those struggles can be.

The Love Dare was, unquestionably, both very difficult and very effective. But in the end, it was obvious that both husband and wife must commit to the relationship to really make it work, and that having Christ as the very foundation of marriage is necessary in order to really understand love. That said, if there was any downside to this it was that we all have to realize that while Christ is our guide... our Lord... our King... He certainly never promises that we will never struggle again once we have accepted Him (which the movie didn't say, but it did give a very "everything is blissfully happy now" ending, and although we certainly experience moments of this, there are also times when we will struggle to even be content and to grasp the peace that was so sought after in the character's lives (and of course in our lives as well).

Still... how refreshing to watch something that, if it errors at all, errors on the side of wholesomeness. The message was powerful... and true I might add... Can't ask for a whole lot more than that.

Now... I also have to admit that "Fireproof" was not even the only movie I took in this weekend (go figure)! On Sunday afternoon, I went with a group of girls to see '"High School Musical 3". And if you haven't seen it... and if you've read all the reviews that say it's only mildly entertaining for nine year olds... well... you can't believe every review you read!

I loved High School Musical. I loved High School Musical 2 (though maybe just slightly less than the first one). And, I loved High School Musical 3! It, like it's predecessors, is squeaky clean, and it's really not nearly as corny as you might guess... for a Disney film (which I am rather partial to)...

Spoilers forthcoming...

Again... last chance to close your browser...

Here we go...

If there is one aspect of HSM3 that I enjoyed less than the others, it was the music. And you might think that's pretty important for a musical! That said, there were a couple of numbers that I absolutely loved, so it certainly wasn't all bad. In fact, none of it was really bad. Some of the musical arrangements just lacked the umph of the previous installments.

HSM3 endeared my to Mrs. Darbis, believe it or not. That was a surprise, no doubt.

I was, perhaps, a little disappointed in Sharpay's role in this film, as she really is my favorite character. However, I loved what they did with Ryan (continuing to build his character from the second movie), and I also loved where the story line went with Kelsey. Troy and Gabriella's story was, of course, dominant, and I was pretty impressed with the depth of it.

Throughout the movie, a whole new class of characters is introduced, and I really hope this does not mean what it inevitably does... High School Musical will not be the same if Disney attempts to make a fourth movie with an all new cast. I think they should quit while they're ahead... and maybe attempt, instead, to make a reunion movie five years down the road...

Overall, I think everyone should see this movie (and the first two). I think they're great. However, if you're going to see them, you have to check the cynicism that craves crappy movies at the door, because you won't get that with HSM... and, really... why would you want it?

Seventeen Days In A Cave Of Wonders...

... Can give you such a crick in the neck!

Wow... 1100 miles is just too much for anyone, but it is especially too much when you are packed like sardines... and your feet can't even touch the floor... and you are all sick!

Seth and Caleb fought the entire way home! If I ever hear the words, "Caleb is irritating me," again, I may jump out a window (hopefully on the first floor)! Ian screamed the entire way home... except when he was sleeping... which was for approximately 3.8 minutes! Grace was actually pretty good on the way home... except when one of her brothers looked at her... which wasn't that often, since they were too busy fighting and screaming!

But we made it! And when we walked through the back door and into the kitchen, our house looked huge... kinda like it looked before we owned it... and I was reminded to be thankful for absolutely everything we have!

Am I sad the trip is over? You bet. Am I already thinking about the next trip? Uh... yep. But am I glad to be home? No doubt about it!

Now... while we were riding the lazy river at Wet and Wild last week, I heard the song, "Don't Blink" for the first time. It's pretty rare that I would put something up here that is not from a "Christian" artist, and truthfully, I had never even heard of Kenny Chesney until I googled the lyrics, so I have no idea if his other music is good or not. It's country, so it might be about his truck... and his dog... and his seventeen affairs... or it might not be. However, I love this song. I am copying the lyrics as a reminder that not only are vacations short... life is short. You just get one shot at it, and then it's gone. Make the most of it!

Don't Blink
By: Kenny Chesney

I turned on the evening news
Saw a old man being interviewed
Turning a hundred and two today
Asked him what's the secret to life
He looked up from his old pipe
Laughed and said "All I can say is."

Don't blink
Just like that you're six years old and you take a nap and you
Wake up and you're twenty-five and your high school sweetheart becomes your wife
Don't blink
You just might miss your babies growing like mine did
Turning into moms and dads next thing you know your "better half"
Of fifty years is there in bed
And you're praying God takes you instead
Trust me friend a hundred years goes faster than you think
So don't blink

I was glued to my tv when it looked like he looked at me and said
"Best start putting first things first."
Cause when your hourglass runs out of sand
You can't flip it over and start again
Take every breathe God gives you for what it's worth

So I've been tryin' ta slow it down
I've been tryin' ta take it in
In this here today, gone tomorrow world we're livin' in

Naw, don't blink

Squeezin' Every Last Drop...

... Day 16, Downtown Disney (again) and Aquatica (again)!

We have done so many things on this trip! Still, there are always things you just can't get done! After much thought, we went with our original plan to visit Downtown Disney in order to secure the last souvenirs we wanted for this trip. I bought some scrapbooking supplies, Seth bought a rock he wanted and some Disney racers, Grace bought a princess pen (but don't worry, she spent money all over the place for the past two weeks, so she had plenty of souvenirs already... and she is broke!), Caleb bought a rock (like Seth's) and a stuffed Mickey Mouse, and Ian got a talking Nemo. Phil almost bought a monorail, but in a last minute moment of reason decided that he really didn't need it...

We had a pretty good list going of things we could do with this day. In the end, we decided to "cut our losses" on things like the Mike and Sully meet and greet... and Epcot's interactive venues like Innoventions and Kodak Imageworks... and the many things we didn't get to experience at DisneyQuest.

Instead, we decided that we'd really like to return to Aquatica to experience the action river, as well as the lazy river, again, and so that's exactly what we did. After a couple of hours, we pirated a few more park maps and then called it a day... and a vacation... and we began the long trek home...

Lisa

Crash and Burn...

... Gosh, I am exhausted!

OK... so I got behind on blogging the trip, because I pretty much just couldn't keep my eyes open the last few nights. I am going to upload a boatload of pics. now, and I will backblog as far as I can before my head hits the keyboard tonight! For those of you who have been reading all along, thanks for your patience! I know you really had nothing better to do this past week than to check my blog over and over again, right? hehehe...

A Little More Magic...

... Day 15 brought one last stop at the Magic Kingdom for this trip. It was fun, but we were all getting tired... and a little bit sick. Seems like I remember something like this from the last time around. When you lack sleep and eat junk for long periods of time, your body finally says, "enough is enough!"

We started out our day at The Crystal Palace, where we enjoyed a wonderful breakfast buffet in the company of friends from the Hundred Acre Wood:

Ian had about the same opinion of the Pooh characters that Caleb had on the last trip, but instead of smacking them around with buttered waffles, he just hid his little head in his hands until they passed by:
After breakfast, we made a beeline for Mickey's Toontown Fair, but we were stopped by the show that was just beginning on stage at the castle, and are we ever glad we were! "Dream Along with Mickey" was really great! Well... except for the part when Ian threw up his entire breakfast and I used the rest of our wipes to clean him up, therefore missing a bit of the Peter Pan scene...

We swung by Tomorrowland and found that there was no line for the Speedway, so we raced... and Phil, Seth, and Grace won... and I learned that Caleb is a very bad driver, and he is never... ever going to get his license!

From there it was on to Toontown, where we found the line for Pixie Hollow, with a 75 minute wait! And, unfortunately, we also found that our Tinkerbell fairies poster was missing! I ran back to the Speedway, and sure enough, there it was, having fallen out of the stroller!

Because Grace loves Tinkerbell, she and I got in the ridiculously long line! After about 30 minutes, Grace said we should probably get out of line and try again later. I laughed... sort of... and then we resumed waiting in line. It was also about this time that we learned that only three of the five fairies appear at a time, which was definitely disappointing, but they told us that Tink is always one of the three, so I decided we could live with that.

When it was finally our turn, we shrunk down to fairy size and entered the magical world of Pixie Hollow. Tink came right out for Grace and encouraged her to fly around! I think I probably enjoyed experiencing this even more than Grace did, as she was absolutely tongue tied... and if you know Grace. you know it takes an awful lot for that to be the case! We also met Rosetta and Irradessa (who was probably the best cast character we have met at Disney). Here are some pics. of my little fairy:While we were in line, Phil and the boys rode the train... and Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin... and The Many Adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh... and maybe some other things, too, though I have forgotten.

When all of the fairy meeting... and then souvenir buying... was done, we all jumped on the train to Frontierland, after taking part in the kids' favorite amusement park pass time:

We proceeded to get fastpasses for Splash Mountain, which I had never ridden! We called Mom and Dad who said they would meet us when it was time to use the fast passes, and then we went over to Adventureland, where we rode Pirates of the Caribbean and were pleased to find that the addition of Johnny Depp did not ruin the ride. And then Phil bought a sword... and I smashed some more pennies... and I began to realize that Disney has it all set up so that when you have stayed so long you are too tired to think clearly, you will spend every last cent you have left!

Mom and Dad then caught up with us and entertained Ian, while the rest of us rode Splash Mountain... which I can now deem the greatest flume ride ever! It was incredibly fun! After this, we grabbed fast passes for Thunder Mountain Railroad and parted ways with Mom and Dad again, planning to visit Tom Sawyer's Island (which has never been my favorite part of the Magic Kingdom, but this trip really wasn't about me, now was it?) However, we found that the Liberty Square River Boat was going to leave shortly, so we decided to jump aboard that, instead, and we called Mom and Dad who were now halfway across the park via the train, who jumped off the train (at a stop, of course, silly) and ran to join us for our little cruise!

When we got off, we used our fastpasses for TMR, which was great! I didn't actually remember all of the theming, as I had only ridden it once before.

Following this, we really did go over to Tom Sawyer's Island, where I promptly found a good photo taking spot, settled in, and then decided to move down just a bit... missing a step... twisting my ankle (which made sounds that an ankle should not know how to make)... falling down... scraping my knee... and not dropping the camera (or Ian, who I was holding the whole time). Embarrassed, I got up... told the one lone person who stopped to ask if I was OK that I was fine (even though I wasn't)... proceeded to take pictures of Phil and the kids coming across the barrel bridge... and then limped around for the rest of the day, wondering if I'd just twisted or broken my ankle. Oh, here's a pic of the part of my family that just loves exploring like Tom Sawyer (yeah... that's all of them):

This was, in effect, the end of my day, because it is not fun to hobble around an amusement park when you are hurting. It also prevented me from climbing through The Swiss Family Treehouse, which is one of my very favorite attractions. I felt crabby. Phil doesn't care for the treehouse all that much, but I told him he had to take the kids, because we have been reading the book for school. He did.

We snapped up fastpasses for the Jungle Cruise, and rode the Magic Carpets of Aladdin while we waited. The Jungle Cruise was as corny as always.

After this, we headed back to Fantasyland, where we ate at Pinocchio's Village Haus, because it had become very obvious to us, while waiting in line for the Jungle Cruise, that Grandpa was very hungry:
I spilled water all over my pizza (long story... but isn't it all), which they replaced, free of charge.

Mom and Dad parted ways with us again, and Grace and I went to wait in the 40 minute line for Ariel, bringing her character count to 27! Grace sung songs from the Little Mermaid... loudly... throughout the entire wait. She then explained to a Disney cast member that she was going to see Tinkerbell fly... that she had already seen her fly once this week... and that even though her brother says Tink is on a string, she knows it's really pixie dust. And, finally, it was our turn to meet Ariel:

From there, we met up with Mom and Dad one more time, who watched Caleb and Ian this time, while the rest of us rode Space Mountain. I have been saying for years that I have never ridden Space Mountain, but to tell you the truth, it was awfully familiar, and I need to ask my dad if he took me on it when I was six. It was a good ride... well... not really. It was fun, but it wasn't because it was a good ride. Again... Disney coasters are all about theming, not thrills!

We found Caleb and Ian asleep when we returned. And it was cold. And they were totally not dressed to be in the cold, so while we were in line a nice French family offered Caleb their blanket and then wouldn't take it back when they left... so we have a souvenir from France... hehehe...

Mom and Dad called it a night at this point, while Phil, Seth, Grace, Caleb, Ian, and I went to our favorite spot to watch Wishes one more time (the bridge to Tomorrowland). Somehow, I had the times mixed up, and we ended up being there an hour earlier than we needed to be... which was fine, because it gave all the kids a chance to take a little nap on the concrete benches while I ran around buying mouse ears, picture frames, and a blanket! I put their mouse ears on them while they were sleeping, and even though I couldn't get them to wake up, they all sat upright as the first few notes for Wishes began to pay, watched Tink fly (out of the castle that was now decorated for Christmas, which was a real treat for me, since I always went to Disney in the summer), and enjoyed the fireworks:

And then... we boarded the monorail one last time... and, completely exhausted, we checked into a hotel, and Phil brought everything up the stairs by himself, because there were no luggage carts...

What a day... and night...

Dejazoo...

... Day 14, Animal Kingdom, among other things:

Hmmm... If we had a "bad" day on our trip in '06, it was at Animal Kingdom. Can't say we ticked off any parking lot employees this time around, but it wasn't any easier getting started! Grace was moody... and Caleb was sick... so I decided to rent a double stroller.... for $31.00... WHAT? You've got to be kidding, right? So, I stand in line and pay in cash, and when I get over to the place where they're supposed to give me my stroller, the guy tells me that I have a voucher for a single stroller. So, I stand in line again, and the original Disney Cast member apologizes and gives me the right voucher, and I go claim my double stroller which already has our name on it, even though the stroller guy didn't believe me that I paid for it!

And so we begin our day... with Mom and Dad... again... because everyone else in the family has conveniently disappeared... again...

We walked through the oasis exhibits and then back to Africa, where we secured fast passes for Kilimanjaro Safari and then immediately jumped on the train to Rafiki's Planet Watch:

Once there, we actually went over to the Conservation Station and Habitat Habit exhibits this time, but we avoided the Affection Section like the plague, because I have a serious phobia of petting zoos. You might be laughing, but I am completely and totally not kidding!

Just as we were ready to leave I noticed Jimminy Cricket standing nearby, so of course we went to meet him, at which point Rafiki and Pocahontas made appearances, so of course we went to meet them, too. Jimminy Cricket kissed Mom, but we didn't have the video camera running at the time, which was a bummer:

We then hopped back on the train and got in the fastpass line for the Safari, which really did move fast. I got all settled in to my seat and switched my camera on, which read "change the battery pack". this would ordinarily not be a problem, but the battery pack was plugged into the wall at the house! I quickly tried to snap some pics. with the kids cameras (that don't have nearly enough megapixels to take decent pics. while riding in a rickety safari vehicle and shooting at moving animals. After giving up on this plan, I tapped Mom on the shoulder and said, "Hey, can I have your camera?" And she gave it to me, even though she looked confused that someone with five cameras (and two video cams.) in her bag would need to borrow a camera. I was conserving battery on the olympus, because I also left that extra battery pack at home and wanted it for video later in the day! In my stressed out state I took some shaky, lousy pics. of the safari, which Mom did e-mail to me, but which I have not yet downloaded... Still, I love the safari!

We met Baloo, which was definitely a highlight of our day (again, the pics. are on Mom's cam., and I haven't downloaded them), and I think we saw trees having sex. Please... there is no possible way to explain this. I am pretty sure there is video of this somewhere if you really want to see it. To tell you the truth, it was beautiful and artistic except for the fat, old man that was standing near us lusting after the tree...

We picked up fastpasses for Kali River Rapids and then headed to Restaurantasaurus for lunch, where we had more typical Disney counter service fare that was about to make me puke at this point.

We picked up fastpasses for expedition Everest on our way back to Kali River and then enjoyed getting wet on yet another raft ride! We went back to Dinoland (again) and rode Triceratops Spin and looked longingly at Primeval Whirl, which was closed for refurb., and which we still have not ridden! Then Phil and the kids played in The Boneyard, while I changed Ian's diaper and wondered why Animal Kingdom always has to be so stinkin' hot...

We walked over to Finding Nemo: The Musical, which was very good. And I will probably have the "Big Blue World" song in my head for the rest of my life! After the musical, it was time to conquer Everest... but not with Caleb who turned out to be about a fraction of a quarter of an inch too short to ride... which ticked me off...

In the end, I'm not sure it even mattered, because I didn't care for the ride. It gave me a headache. And it's not like I am a coaster wimp or anything. But, come on, only a moron would go to Disney for it's coasters. Everyone knows that. Still, here's the video:

This basically ended our day at Animal Kingdom. And to tell you the truth, I'm not sure I really need to go back there... well... except to ride Primeval Whirl... As Disney Magic goes, Animal Kingdom is just OK...

We made a quick stop at the house for batteries and at Chick-Fil-A for dinner.

From there, we went back over to Epcot again (yeah... believe it or not), where we hit Character Spot in order to meet the classic Disney characters we had not yet seen on this trip:

Phil, the kids, and I then set up camp with leaking glow sticks (that turned Ian's hair a fluorescent purple color) and premium Mickey Mouse ice cream bars (that Caleb ate this time around, but Ian wouldn't touch). By the way, I really enjoyed telling the guy at the ice cream cart that all six bars were for me! We scoped out an area of prime real estate for the Illuminations show and waited there for an hour and a half, warding off other spectators who hoped to take our spots. And finally, the rest of our family showed up... which was a good thing, because it isn't easy to save that much space!

We saw Illuminations together, and to tell you the truth, I thought it was pretty good, but not the amazing show that everyone seems to rave about. I guess I'm just partial to Wishes, though. Afterward, we has somebody take a quick pic. of us all in front of Spaceship Earth. Unfortunately, there were no Photopass photographers in sight, so this picture is just alright... not the shot I'd really hoped for:

Oh... please take note of my flashing Mickey Mouse ears. Those were really fun!

And thus ended the part of our vacation with everyone there in Florida.

Watterlogged...

... day 13, Blizzard Beach... and the subsequent "pool party"!

We love waterparks... no matter I don't know how to swim! We were terribly disappointed to find that Typhoon Lagoon was going to close for it's annual refurbishment just days before we arrived in FL. However, Blizzard Beach was open, so off we went...

Upon arrival, we found Mom, Dad, Steve, Nancy, and the girls and took a trip up the Ski Lift, which is just as terrible with a baby as I remember it! The ride operator at the top was, however, impressed that he didn't have to stop the lift for me, because I was capable of grabbing Ian and jumping off! When we reached the top, we took a ride on Teamboat Springs, the family raft slide. Seth and Grace went with Grandma and Grandpa, and I think we could have persuaded Grandma to ride again... at gunpoint... Phil and I rode with Caleb and Ian. It was a trip:

We then went in search of life jackets... oops... small oversight... and took a "spin" on the lazy river:
Hey look, we're a "Hidden Mickey"!I love this one:
Here's a video clip of Ian, literally spinning:

We enjoyed Ski Patrol Training Camp, although Seth was just slightly irritated that I would not let him ride the zipline that dropped off into over 8 feet of water! The kids loved the floats and the slides!
Crossing the Floats:
Caleb (above), Seth and Grace (Below)

Here's a video clip of one of the slides. Seth and Grace come down first, followed by Caleb and Phil:

The kids also enjoyed Tike's Peak, although Seth found that he was too tall for one of the slides (which made him cry). Grace took Ian down the baby slides until he was comfortable enough to go on his own... head first!

Grandpa found us playing at Tike's Peak, so we were able to hook up with him and Grandma again, and we went to have lunch at Lottawatta Lodge. I was getting pretty sick of counter service amusement park food at this point, but at least they had fish. You can only eat so many personal pizzas, cheeseburgers, and chicken nuggets in 2 weeks! I might add here that everyone from our family was having lunch at the same place at approximately the same time, but due to lack of planning, we did not eat together...

After lunch, we rode Runoff Rapids... twice (the kids would have gone again, but my legs were burning from all the stairs), and we rode the Downhill Double Dipper, which was a really short racing slide with a really long line. It was fun, though! We decided to skip on the mat slides and the body slides, as the kids couldn't ride them.

We splashed around in the wave pool for awhile, and I have to say that I do not care for this particular wave pool. The waves are almost continuous, and it made me kind of motion sick! Grace, Elizabeth, and Audrey all managed to scrape their knees up on the bottom, as well!

After a major temper tantrum from Grace ('nough said), we took one more ride on the lazy river, and then we called it a day, because the park was closing!

We went back to the house where we ate pizza and had a "pool party"... except pretty much no one else wanted to swim (except Elizabeth), because they had had enough water for the day. As we did not get to use the pool very much (due to our busy schedule), we enjoyed this time in the water. I took a pretty good underwater shot of Seth, and a video clip of Phil having way too much fun with a giant inflatable dolphin:

By the way, I have no idea why my video quality for the last two days is so poor. The videos look great when I play them on my computer from the raw files, and I haven't done anything differently with these than the ones from earlier in the trip. I'll continue to post them, but I'm not sure how to make them look any better. It might be hit and miss.

You Kidnap The Parents...

... We'll steal the car!

Ah... our long awaited trip to Epcot finally arrived (uh... wait... weren't we just there a couple of days ago?) Well... anyway...

We had been planning this day for over a year, when Phil booked a room for Mom and Dad at the Polynesian resort! Mom has often talked about wanting to stay there... for as long as I have known her, anyway, and we wanted to pull this off as a complete surprise... which was not easy!

Just as everyone else got ready to leave the house for our day at Epcot, Phil ran out and informed them that he had a school assignment that he had forgotten about, and he had to get it in, so they should just go on ahead of us. Mom (who was situated in Brad and Sheri's van) protested, saying that they could wait, but Phil insisted. Then... just as Brad was backing up, Phil ran out again, saying that he needed Mom's car keys, since he'd left something in the trunk. Again, Mom said they would wait, but Brad peeled out of the driveway, and that was the end of that!

Phil and I proceeded to rush around, packing everything we could find that belonged to Mom and Dad and throwing it in their car. Then I drove the kids to the monorail station, and Phil drove Mom and Dad's car to the Polynesian parking lot. Unfortunately, he had a very difficult time checking them into their room, because he had listed their names as "guests" but not his own (since... duh... he wasn't staying there!) Even though everything else about the reservation was covered with his name, they didn't want to let him check in! Finally they bent some rules, and all was well... Except we'd wasted an hour of our lives, and Caleb, in his distress, had chained himself to the monorail ramp:

I honestly did not pose him like that!

Seth and Grace made great use of the time, determining to work at Disney when they grow up so that they can paint the benches... and the sidewalk! Grace later informed me that she is also going to tear down The Haunted Mansion and Stitch's Great Escape... I hope she has an upper management position if she is going to make decisions like that... hehehe...

Phil finally did join us... after a 20 minute solo monorail ride from the Poly (could've walked in 5)... and we were off to Epcot!

We met up with the rest of the extended fam. and took a ride on Test Track (except for Mom and Dad who stayed off to entertain Ian)! Here's the video from the "Mom Cam"... It was kind of hard to hold it steady, as I was flying!

Please note that this did not affect Grace's hair, which was now on day 4 of the Bippidi Bobbidi Boutique do! I have no idea if it was supposed to last that long, but I am not complaining!

Then we all went our separate ways for a couple of hours. We rode the Dinosaur Ride in Universe of Energy, and we think the addition of Ellen is pretty irritating... but not for all the reasons you might imagine. We just didn't really like having people (Ellen and Bill Nye) showing up in the dinosaur part of the ride. It took away from the experience. It was hilarious, though, when Caleb (who was situated on the outside seat of our row) looked over at the dinosaurs... and then looked at me and said, "Mommy, I shouldn't have chosen this seat!" Grace was terrified of the dinosaurs, and Ian fell asleep! It was quite the ride! We also rode Living With the Land, which our kids find interesting, even though most people say it is boring!

We met up with the rest of the fam. again to ride Spaceship Earth, which has been greatly improved since our last trip to Disney! And then we all jumped the monorail, supposedly to go to the Magic Kingdom.

However, right before we arrived at the transportation center, we all become very... very thirsty, and decided it would be a great idea if Dad would show us the all you can drink soda bar that he is so fond of, located (you guessed it) at the Poly. So, we jumped another monorail, rode to the Poly, all proceeded to order drinks, and sat for awhile until Phil conveniently had to use the restroom. When he came back, he slipped the room keys by Mom's chair, and when we got ready to go he said, "See ya later Mom and Dad!" And they were very confused, because they thought they were coming with us. And I have to note here that we had three separate video cameras running at this point, and they never caught on!

Phil handed the room keys to Mom saying that she must have dropped them, and she was completely confused, because they weren't hers. Finally, Phil mentioned that they were staying at the Polynesian for the night, and then they got it... realized why all the cameras were on them... and were very happy! Here's a pic., just before the guy in the golf cart came to whisk them away to their room:

Everybody else actually did go back to the Magic Kingdom at this point, but we returned to Epcot, because there were still a lot of things we wanted to do there! Future World was only open until 7:00, so we really had to scurry. We had dinner at the Electric Umbrella, and spent some time at Innoventions, where we learned about storms and recycling... and I might not sound fun, but it really was.

Then we headed over to The Land, where we rode Soarin' with our fast passes! Phil, Seth, and Grace came off the ride with 3 minutes to spare for me and Caleb to get on! All I can say is "WOW!" What an amazing ride (and I don't like simulators)! I honestly felt like if Caleb leaned forward he was going to fall into the ocean!

After that, we ran to Imagination and walked on to Figment, just like 2 years ago. We did not take time to stop at the Kodak Imageworks exhibits, which was disappointing, because they looked greatly improved since our last visit, as well.

Instead, we ran over to The Seas. And I do mean ran! We walked on to The Nemo Ride (which usually has a pretty good sized line), and then we walked into a showing of Turtle Talk With Crush (which also usually has a pretty good sized line). Ian was screaming, and Crush made a comment about someone in the audience "speaking dolphin", which cracked us all up! We actually did get to run through The Living Seas exhibit after that, because they hadn't closed it down for the night yet, and then we were eaten (again) by Bruce. Please keep in mind that Phil tends to be eaten more graphically than the rest of us:

We then boarded the monorail for the fourth time in one day and headed back to the house:

It was a very good day...

Almost Disappointing...

Day 11 brought some more rest for me and the kids, while Phil, Dad, Steve, and Brad went to look at some "choos" in the morning… They arrived back at the house around noon, we ate a quick lunch of spaghettios and vegetable soup (not mixed together… duh…), and then we were off to Disney’s Hollywood Studios (formerly MGM).

Now, this had never been our favorite park. I was there in ’94, shortly after it opened, and we took the kids in ’06, basically just to meet Woody and Jessie and to eat at Pizza Planet. However, our hopes were set pretty high, with the additions of Toy Story Mania, The Block Party Bash (Pixar Parade), The High School Musical Pep Rally, Narnia, and the Mike and Sully Character Greeting… We also planned to hit a couple of stage shows, since the kids are now more familiar with many Disney movies than they were two years ago…

We went to the Little Mermaid show first. It was fun, but it was basically just a condensed retelling of the story. We liked the special effects, though. It is always great when you can get rained on indoors…

Strike 1 was the line for Toy Story Mania… 90 minutes! And all of the fast passes for the entire day were gone within an hour of the park opening! Strike 2 was Narnia… no strollers allowed (which is difficult with 4 small kids), so I opted to stay out with Ian… and Grace, who refused to wait in a line. Eventually, I did convince Grace to wait in the very short line to meet Prince Caspian, which she did… begrudgingly… because I told her the only other option was to go sit in the street and wait for Daddy and the boys to emerge from the Narnia attraction. When they did just that, they were less than pleased. Seth’s direct quote was, “that was a waste of time”, and Phil was irritated, because they had shown several video clips that were way too intense for Caleb, and besides that, they gave away the whole story line… and we haven’t seen the movie yet! Strike 3 was The Block Party Bash… which took forever to get to us (we thought we were at the beginning of the parade route, but we were at the end), and then the characters just kind of passed us, even though they did a lot of dancing in the street and interacting with the audience before they got to us… If you’re counting, we should have struck out by now… but I guess we were hitting a lot of foul balls… because… Strike 4 was the Star Tours simulator that Phil rode on a fast pass while we were waiting for the parade. He said it was just OK. And, Strike 5 was our inability to find Mike and Sully anywhere. And, Strike 6 was that the High School Musical Pep Rally has switched to HSM3, so we didn’t know the songs, since we haven’t seen the movie, and we decided to just pass on it altogether. Strike 7… Stunt Spectacular was closed. Strike 8… Backlot Tour involved walking without a stroller (we skipped this). Strike 9… Muppet Show now has various shady jokes. Need I go on? Probably not. However… Strike 10… While we were eating our very yummy dinner at Pizza Planet, we realized that the last Beauty and the Beast show was about to begin (so we skipped that, too)… Strike 11… It was so crowded in the Honey I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure that I was more worried about losing my kids due to excessive people than their shrunken size…

Around 6:30, we headed over to the stadium where Fantasmic takes place and decided to take our chances, even though we knew it might be too much for the kids… which it probably was… BUT… it was amazing! And here our lousy day at Hollywood Studios took a turn for the better! I was simply blown away by the show! I mean it was really… really… really great… magical as only Disney can do it! The villains were pretty… well… villainous… but we all walked away very pleased with the show. As a side note… It is very difficult to start a wave with only six people… especially when four of them do not know how to do the wave… but it can be done…

Since it was getting late, we hoped we would find a shorter line for Toy Story mania… and we did! The wait was now only 80 minutes… uh… did I just write, “80 minutes”? Yep… that’s right! And, since I am an idiot, I decided it would work for me to stand in line for that long with Seth, Grace, and Caleb, while Ian slept in the stroller and Phil sat with him, charging the battery of his video camera in a secluded outlet plug that he found on an outside wall at the park! Phil also made a short detour through the exit doors of the ride to bring me my camera… which I forgot… even though I knew I would have time for plenty of pics. during my almost hour and a half wait! In the end, it was a fantastic ride… well worth the wait, although I was afraid I might lose my mind by the end with three wiggly… whining… completely exhausted children!

Fantasmic and Toy Story mania definitely saved the day! As it turns out, there are a few things we would like to return to Hollywood Studios for, if time allows (namely the character appearances that we missed), but on future trips, I’m not real convinced we need to go there unless there are some major changes to the park. It all made for a good story though…

We left Hollywood Studios about an hour after it closed for the night... imagine that!

Regroupin'...

... Just in time to take a trip around the world!

Spent the first part of this day doing laundry, cleaning up, and getting things in order. For the first time this trip, I feel like everything is where it needs to be in order to launch out each day... and it only took four hours... ugh!

In the late afternoon, we decided to go to Epcot, where we visited the World Showcase. An Epcot cast member got a pretty good kick out of Grace at the map stand when she decided to take a map printed in Japanese, and then she couldn't figure out how to read it! In the end, we decided it would be best if she saved the Japanese map as a souvenir and took an English one for navigating. Caleb, also, decided he should probably have one that was printed in English which brought even more laughter, because he can't read yet, so it didn't really matter which map he picked!

Last time we were here, we skipped on the Kidcot Fun Stops, but not this time! All of the kids made masks and collected the "charms" from each of the eleven countries! Then they got prizes (posters and buttons proclaiming that they are Walt Disney World Honorary Citizens) for all their hard work! We had a great time exploring the world! Here's my favorite pic:

The kids are getting on each other's nerves just a bit at this point. Seth and Caleb were having a pretty good fight, so I instructed them to stand and pose for a picture in Canada... like they loved each other! This was the result... Then they stopped fighting for a while...

Probably the best part was an interactive street show in the UK, because at the end one of the actresses said a line about the king being happy... and the people being happy... and, "Even the shreiking baby was happy!" Which was a reference to Ian who had screamed intermittently throughout the performance... hehehe...

We met Jasmine (again), Aladdin, and Genie in Morocco. Jasmine made a good save when she didn't "remember" having met Grace yesterday morning and explained that it must be because Grace wasn't wearing her jacket at breakfast... hehehe... Ian would not acknowledge Aladdin and was scared to death of Genie. But he liked Jasmine... hmmm... just like someone else I know...

I bought a passport and had fun collecting stamps from each country as well, even though this is something that kids usually do... I thought it was a blast!

We had all of our names written in Japanese and Chinese, and we found out that I was born in the year of the Ram (stubborn...yeah...), Seth was born in the year of the Dragon, Grace was born in the year of the Snake, Caleb was born in the year of the Monkey (no surprise there), and Ian was born in the year of the Dog. Phil didn't have anything to stamp or sign, so we don't know what his name looks like or when he was born... hehehe...

Here are a few pics. of our trip around the world. It took us several hours this time around, as opposed to our sprint around the world in an hour and forty-five minutes last time! Truthfully, I could probably spend at least a couple of days there, but that will be an adventure for some years down the road, when the kids can appreciate World Showcase yet a little better...

My only real disappointment is that I discovered that there are smashed penny machines in each country... after we were almost finished with the showcase... I smashed one generic Epcot World Showcase penny, but if I have time to run through by myself, I'd like to get them all...

Everyone was exhausted by the time we were done. Phil and the kids took a nap at Guest Relations, while I claimed the prizes I mentioned earlier:

The kiddos were asleep again when we arrived back at the house to watch the election results. I fell asleep, too... on the couch... and woke up to announcements of president elect Obama. And the world didn't go up in flames contrary to some popular opinion... And with that let me say that I have no idea what the next four years will bring. Some ideals that Obama holds to are a little scary to me, but he has many good ideas, as well, and I trust that God is the one who is really in control of all things, so one election isn't going to make or break the world.

I'm out...
